Initial Creation Date: Aug. 7, 2023
Published: Aug. 7, 2023

Description
I mentioned this on the Canes board, but a 1-for-1 swap of Backlund and Skjei would have significant utility for both clubs if Hanifin is dealt this offseason.

That backlund trade isn't actually a bad idea. I think it needs a touch up. Skjei is younger and will have extremely high value coming off a 17 goal season... counterpoint, Backlund is just an absolutely filthy player...

I like this a lot from a Flames perspective. It all hinges on the Dallas trade, and I'm not sure they'd go for it. I don't know what Stars fans think of Marchment and his contract, and I think they would prefer to move money out of their defense rather than forward group.

We talked about it this morning, but yes, a Backlund trade would open up three scoring lines for the Canes:

Bunting-Aho-Jarvis
Svechnikov-Kotkaniemi-Necas
Drury-Backlund-Teravainen

And one elite defensive line:

Martinook-Staal-Fast

What a lineup that would be!

Then a monsterous back end of
Slavin - DeAngelo
Orlov - Burns
Chatfield - Pesce (or something to this affect)

Then the netminding Trio...

It's evil. Team would be so freaking deep

Canes and Skjei pass. Backlund doesn’t do us any good as another 3C for the team.

The Suter contract is a rather palatable buyout after this season (with only a year remaining) because it is technically not a 35+ contract. Dallas can run a group like this:

Hanifin-Heiskanen
Lundell-Lundqvist
Suter/Harley-Hakanpaa

And just buyout the Suter contract after the season.

Doesn't do us any good? I don't quite agree with that. Teravainen and Drury are IMO much better fits with Backlund and his offensive skills than they are with Staal. Acquiring Backlund keeps the defensive line in tact.

Backlund has 2 50 point seasons in the last 7. Doesn’t do us much that Staal and KK doesn’t. Skjei and Pesce should only be moved for clear roster improvements. Backlund doesn’t fit in that category.

why would the canes do that and not just use Skjei and the plus to get Lindholm who isnt 35. Canes aren't acquiring anyone who is that old at forward.

Because Skjei+ isn't nearly enough for Lindholm. Maybe a three-way trade is necessary.
