Description

Got curious so I looked up which is more valuable a 3C or a top 6 winger.

Only data I found was old and I didn't take the time to cross reference. If anyone wants to actually do all the math be my guest.

tl;dr is that a 3C was about 10% less valued 4 years ago than a 2nd line winger and about half as valued on average as a top line winger. So realistically this is only a good idea if a pivot is needed due to something like an injury to one of the top three centers.

And even then only maybe. Are these lines better or would 3rd line McLeod and Palat out of the top 6 be better?

Would be amazing if he pulled it off, but I don't have a lot of confidence in Mercer sticking as a 3C unless the Devils were forced to make him a C due to injuries and he crushes it.

Plus he can play with both Jack and Nico.

I think Mercer is 3C only in the sense that he steps up if something happens to Jack or Nico…but he has proven valuable as top-6 winger.

I'd like to see him start the season with Jack and Timo. They played the last couple of games in the playoffs against Carolina and all 3 looked good together.

The way Ruff runs the lines we will probably see this lineup against deeper opponents for the added depth. Ruff doesn't care about the lines and he sends out the guys who he thinks will be most effective at that moment. Not that I love that approach but thats usually what he does.
