There wasn't really any pressing reason to buy him out. The Kraken had enough cap flexibility to do what they needed to do this offseason without making that move. In any event Driedger's healthy again and will be battling Daccord for the backup goalie spot behind Grubauer.

Even if Seattle had the cap to add Petry, I'm not convinced he'd be an upgrade on Borgen or Schultz, so there's really not much reason for them to trade for him.

montreal can get more for petry at his reduced cap hit and will get a first easily
