3 way CGY-TOR-X team

Created by: F50marco
Team: 2023-24 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 14, 2023
Published: Aug. 14, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming:

-Backlund, Hanifin and Lindholm all confirm they won't resign by a certain date. So CGY has to move them to not lose them for nothing.

-Nylander and Toronto won't come to terms on an extension by a certain date so they trade instead of lose for nothing at the end of the year.

-CGY doesn't want a full rebuild but more of a retool so shedding some pending UFA's and getting some picks but also wants a player like Nylander for example. (I know CGY fans, not what I would do but seems where they are trending)

-Toronto wants player X from another team (Lets say Pesce just for example) in exchange for Nylander but that team (Carolina) doesn't want Nylander but rather picks, prospects, cap space and maybe a lesser roster player only.

-Pesce and Nylander in this scenario would both sign long term contracts with their new teams.

Assume the "x" value isn't a fleece but not a bad trade either. Average value all around here.

                CAR
Assortment of picks and prospects from each of the Lindholm/Hanifin/Backlund deals. Potentially something from CGY's pool also.

Once again, Carolina is just an example here. Could be another team with what Toronto wants but only wants picks and prospects back instead of Nylander.

I'll agree with non playoff teams should be trading their upcoming UFAs. But the Leafs have I believe 8 upcoming UFAs, do they all get traded? Of course not. There is no benefit to the Leafs this year if they are in a win mode to trade Nylander, unless they get immediate equal ice value back in a trade Gee, half the teams in the league in the won't be trading their upcoming UFAs.
And with that Nylander trade to the Canes......the Leafs get back two upcoming UFAs. Kinda defeats the purpose of trading Nylander because he's a UFA.

So your stance is to let Nylander walk at end of season for nothing? Or do you think they should extend him and have 4 guys making up over 40Mil of the cap?

Like so many, you use the "Let them walk". That is absolutely meaningless. The player has the choice of signing wherever he wants.
Now I believe the Leafs will make a fair offer to Nylander, but if he decides to sign elsewhere (for whatever reason) that's the nature of UFA.
This summer the Leafs had ROR, Accarili, Holl, Scheen "walk" as UFAs. But then they signed Bertuzzi, Domi, Klingberg who "walked" from other teams. Just an exchange of player...like "cap trade"
What makes Nylander so special? There are over 100 upcoming UFAs..
But to answer you question specifically. I really don't care if the Leafs resign Nylander (or Matthews/Bertuzzi/Domi/Klingberg/Brodie/ Giordano. Lafferty or Samsonov.....all UFAs next summer.
I don't think the Leafs (or any team)_ should overpay UFAs. I look at the Leafs will have 9 upcoming UFAs...but more importantly those 9 carry a cap currently of about 43m. As a Leaf fan hoping the GM spends that 43m wisely on whoever....some might be resigned, others won't.

Did you read the description? This was A) under the assumption that they won't be able to get Nylander resigned to a new contract before unrestricted free agency and B) Not necessarily for Carolina's players. I just used Carolina to get the point across. Also mentioned that Pesce would be resigned to the Leafs so they are getting a long term asset in the deal at a cheaper cap than what Nylander will cost them.

Secondly, I didn't say anything about having to trade all the pending UFA's. The players involved all happen to be pending UFA's but that was not the point of the post. The point was CGY has 3 UFA's that are probably not resigning. Tor has Nylander who they'll likely have to pay way too much for if they resign and would be better suited distributing that cap throughout the lineup more evenly. I used Carolina just because Pesce's name has been mentioned a few times but like i said, just used Carolina as the example 3rd team who may have what Toronto wants.

So basically making trades is pointless then? Lol Just let all pending UFA's walk and sign other teams UFA's.

Also I think we can all agree, Nylander is better than all the players mentioned that were let walk to free agency. They could potentially get better players in return in a trade then to simply let Nylander walk and sign someone else in free agency. There is no guarantee Toronto will be able to sign one of the players they pursue. At least not without overpaying, but then we're right back to the reasoning for NOT over paying for Nylander again.

No making trades isn't pointless. Making trades "just because they are UFAs". is pointless. I've thought that trading 7m Nylander for a 4m Dman so the Leafs would have another 3m in cap to fill out their roster would be a good trade this summer. But the Leafs aren't going to weaken themselves this season by trading any of upcoming UFAs because they are in "win mode". That's true will almost all playoff teams.

                  Few things.
                  1. The latest report is Calgary abf Lindholm are working on an 8 year extension
                  2. Calgary would be stupid to want Nylander if they are selling. He's not remotely good enough to make a team with zero center depth competitive.
                  3. Picks and prospects can go a long way to making a team compete again fast. Look at what LAK, NYR, and DAL were able to build with a couple relatively high picks while not scorching earth

You are just dying to see TO blow it up eh? Willy will resign in TO, hopefully before the puck drops on this upcoming season and this will all end.

Once again did you read the description. Its pretty obvious i wasnt inferring what you are saying. Not sure why your going down this hole. I pretty explicitly mentioned that this scenario is assuming things. It wasn't a blanket statement "all UFA must go!". Not sure where you're getting that from.

                  Few things.

I mean until its a signed deal, its not 100% right. Which is why i wrote in the description all that is being assumed for this to work.

I dont disagree with the CGY-Nylander idea. I even wrote that in the description but lets be honest, its not out of the realm of possibility that they will want a speedier retool vs an actual rebuild. I think with Huberdeau, Kadri, Weeger, etc all signed long term, they wont rebuild.

Dont disagree at all with the prick and prospects thing either. That would be my direction also.

Lol how did you come away with that idea? I was pointing out a scenario in which they could try to get better IF they couldn't resign Nylander. Unless you prefer to lose Nylander for free in free agency if a deal cant be reached prior to the start of the year?

The issue is centers. It's impossible to win without centers. And realistically speaking they aren't getting anyone 1C caliber outside of a prospect they already have (Zary, Honzek), a prospect they get in a trade (Sillinger, Savoie, Turcotte as some examples), or through the draft. Getting someone like Nylander doesn't help with options 2 or 3 so they would be almost completely banking on option 1.

He's going to resign it's just a matter of time.

At what cap? If its above 9M which has been mentioned, i think that is a bad idea for the already top heavy team. Yeah if he decides to go against everything we've heard ans signs for 7M than by all means. Untill that happens though, I'm exploring the option if he wants 9M minimum and wont sign for less.

It's one year where JT makes what he makes before it drops by a big amount. This isn't difficult

He'll be in the lower 9's. 9.2 is my hope.

Cool cool. Once again, I'm exploring what happens if Tor doesn't go down that route. Just a hypothetical. Precisely why I explained in the description " assuming Tor and Nylander don't come to terms on an extension".

                  I agree this isn't difficult.
