Petry benched in the 3rd game of the season. This haven't aged well for Detroit in a heartbeat...

The cap space is the real prize is the deal. With Dach being put on LTIR and Dvorak coming off soon enough and Price there for eternity. They'll have 14 million in cap space to take on bad deals. Anaheim, Chicago, Montreal, San Jose, Nashville and Philly are the only teams that be salary brokers in the league. Quite the leverage. Well worth it to eat half the salary from retention especially in a wide open Eastern conference, many teams will go for it this season!

In hindsight this isn't bad for either team. A 7th dman in Petry for a 4th and an AHL defenseman with very little promise. Comes down to whether you think Petry at 2.3 x 2 is worth more or less than a 4th

Montreal doesn't get deadline cap scaling bc they're using LTIR so not really.

Just for example:

Montreal has 9 mill in deadline cap, 12 with dach to LTIR, 8 mill with dvorak coming off
Anaheim gets 29 mill due to cap scaling
AZ 25 mill, SJS 13, Chicago 53 mill, CBJ 17, philly 8, nashville 32, detroit 16.

There is a very common misconception about how LTIR works

Montreal has less deadline cap space than every other team without playoff aspirations. Using up 2 retention spots as well they'll be less able to take on cap than any selling team but maybe washington/stl if they become sellers.

I guess it depends on the 1 retention slot being used and the 2.3 million dollars being stored in MTL...

I don't think many people would take Petry > Lindstrom.

Knowing Montreal was desperate to trade him and he didn't want to play here, he should not of gotten value.

And he didn't, the value came from the retention

Did they though?

Just checked stats, they didn't...

Petry has 7 points in 20 games

Lindstrom has 4 in 14 games

Not everything is stats based.

Petry is statistically having his worst season in nearly 10 years, getting #4/#5 minutes on the Red Wings. He's primarily being used on a shutdown pair, and they are getting shelled in their zone.

Lindstrom was never meant to be anything more than a 6th-7th D (which being a 2nd rd pick, isn't ideal) , and the team does better on average when he is on the ice. So if he becomes a 3rd pair, shutdown D for the Habs for the next couple seasons, they get the better end of the deal.

Also have to factor in age as well. Petry is in the twilight of his career, and Lindstrom is just starting his

1/09 Montreal puts lindstrom on waivers.

Petry is not the spring chicken he once was, but lindstrom should have never stepped foot on nhl ice again.

Aside from a few costly errors he wasn't that bad.
Was worth seeing what he could do with a change of environment.
Unfortunately it's a numbers game on the blue line in Montreal so you can't have those highly visible errors and expect to keep your spot.
Could still be a worthy waiver claim for a team that emphasizes simplification from the defense.

and Petry shouldn't be in the NHL, but he's making 2.3M for the next 2 years and will only get worse.
