Overpay to clear cap AND load up

Created by: senators55

Initial Creation Date: Aug. 21, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Note: this would be the post deadline roster (Greig would be in the minors until needed). These trades make Ottawa a bigger, more defensive, and higher scoring team. It also allows for Pinto to receive a market value contract, that will hopefully keep him happy and in Ottawa long term. It also allows for line pairings: we know Tkachuk and Stutzle play well together, and Tarasenko will get top 6 minutes. We also know that Norris and Batherson were good alongside Tkachuk when Norris was healthy - putting a poor mans Tkachuk in Tippett will hopefully recreate that chemistry. Giroux can support and set up Pinto and Kubalik, who are both shooters. The bottom line is capable of being one of the more skilled energy lines in the NHL. The additional skaters are capable NHLers who aren't afraid to get physical - and there is additional depth in the AHL in Crookshank, Sokolov, Bernard Docker, and Kelly - should injuries take a toll.

Flyers decline

Fair enough: What would need to be added, I assume not much? Currently, its a 1st rounder, a prospect picked 19th, a prospect picked at 33rd, and a 2nd rounder. Plus Joseph who is still young and a good bet as a reclamation project while the Flyers are in rebuild mode - with some salary retention, he could be moved tomorrow for additional pieces, as he is a top PK specialist and one of the fastest players in the league. I don't think many other teams will give more than 2 firsts and 2 high seconds value. What San Jose got for last years Norris Trophy Winner: Penguins first-round pick (2024, top-10 protected)
Mikael Granlund (salary dump with some value)
Jan Rutta
Mike Hoffman (Salary Dump)

Let’s be real. You can hype up Joseph all you want but he’s a 3rd liner at best coming off a down year. He’s 26 he isn’t a young player or a reclamation project even late bloomers are considered 23-25. He’s also fairly overpaid on a 3 year deal. I break the trade down like this:

Tippett with retention for a 1st and Jarventie
Seeler and a 3rd for Lassi
Future considerations for dumping Joseph, the 2nd, and the 4th

In that case, Seeler can fetch a 3rd so it would be two 3rds for a 2nd rounder. I’m okay with that.

Joseph dump for a 2nd and 4th. I’m not really happy about but could live with it.

The main problem is the Tippett for 1st and Jarventie. I’m assuming you would like the 1st to be top 10 protected and there is a very real chance it could be in the top 10 again which means it would be a 2025 1st. Jarventie is definitely a good prospect but there’s just no reason for the Flyers to move Tippett after he had a break out year. If he is worth a 1st and good prospect now why wouldn’t they bet on him taking another step in becoming a real goal scorer that then becomes worth a ton more. Worst case he just has the same year he did last year and is still worth the same if they want to cash in on him but right now they have no reason to move him unless it’s for a big overpayment which this isn’t.

That’s pretty much what I’m seeing from this but if you think differently feel free to let me know

EASY NO to both.

That'd be really bad for Ottawa.

Just trade Kubalik and then you don't need to clear any cap space and lose all these assets for nothing lol

The problem with Sens fans is that Pierre Dorion has been the GM for 7 years and he has shown all this time that asset management is not important, but it's actually quite the opposite. Just ask Tampa Bay

1st + Jarventie + 2nd is QUITE valuable, more than Tippett. Plus Joseph + Thomson + 4th for Seeler and a 3rd, barf

The Brannstrom trade makes even less sense, he has A LOT more value than Hakanpää

This would only make sense for Dallas along with a Suter buyout but a Suter buyout isn’t happening

Flyers aren't trading Tippett.
