Description
I know Bear isn't back for a while, but he's better than Zaitsev and if he likes his time here...extend?
We don't exactly have a lot of RD in the farm system.

Mathieu is overpaid...yes, but we have the cap space to take him on. OTT gets a similar player back for less than the league minimum and RFA status.

Yes, Joseph is overpaid but it's not by much, 500 to 700K at most. If OTT had the cap they wouldn't be moving him at all.
If OTT had a need for Katchouk this might not seem like an overpayment, but as it is, OTT is paying too much to ship Joseph here.

I guess I just disagree. Joseph is making ~4x what Boris is making and nothing about last year (in isolation I'll admit) says they're really all that different. Yes a little...ok fine, but $9.3M is what's owed to Mathieu. That's down right awful for a guy they'll give 14 atoi to.

I like both moves for the Hawks. Sens fans probably balk at including Thomson in the deal though.

We agree that last season was an outlier. Good starting place.
And we probably agree that a lot of Joseph's value is in his defensive play, forecheck, and penalty killing.
And we can certainly agree that without the outlier season, he's good for 10+ goals.
So yes, I feel he's easily worth $2M... so people need to stop talking about his FULL SALARY being a dump. It isn't.
And I FIRMLY believe Ottawa would keep him if they could.

I mean, it's what, 750-800K per goal last year? And it's not like Joseph is some defensive nightmare either... And Ott doesn't have the cap space for Pinto

I don't disagree that OTT would keep him if they could. No one wants to sign a player to a bloated contract to then turn around and dump assets to lose that player. We agree there.

I'm not sure how you interpreted my comments to somehow agreeing he's a 10+ goal scorer a year??? I didn't talk about production at all. BUT I did reference a "relative overall" comp to Boris. So I guess I could return the favor and say...We agree Boris is a 10+ goals per season guy too! Just isn't on a bloated contract.

Joseph had back to back 12 goal seasons (while playing 56 and 69 games) before his outlier season while playing injured. And as I mentioned Joseph's value is on the PK and defensive side of the game; that's how he was deployed in Tampa and in Ottawa. Katchouk on the other hand, has 8 goals over his 117 NHL game career and is not a 1st unit PK guy on any team. These are not comparable players IMO.

Can’t compare Katchouk‘s contract with Joseph’s, he had zero NHL games when he got it… I mean come on… let’s be at least a bit down to earth

And Joseph’s contract is far from awful… I mean ES defense, ES offense, PK, speed, forecheck… brings some good stuff… wouldn’t have been overpaid at all based on his 2021-22 season

Oh yeah because hockey players are paid based on the goals they scored last season… and Joseph PK metrics are always among the top of the league

Please, enlighten me on those metrics when Ottawa's PK was middle of pack... such a great penalty killer definitely contribute to a mediocre PK

You never seen his advanced stats? You know he played in Tampa before? And what does it have to do with team stats? Many other players PK

If Joseph's so valuable bc he plays PK, wouldn't OTT have a great PK, bc they have one of the best at it? At the low, low price of 2.9 mill?

What is that argument... 🤣... Bellmare played on Tampa too, doesn't make him worth 3 mill...

And you have yet to prove me wrong... He lead a terrible team defensively in 2 PK metrics... Doesn't make him a 3 million dollar player... Especially with how bad the PK was for OTT this year

Look, I'm not trying to be offensive, so I apologize if it's coming across that way. He got that contract because he was traded from TBL and then got 12 points in 11 games. There's zero other reason to be giving him THAT contract off his time in Tampa. Dorion took a calculated risk and it hasn't panned out. No shame in that. Happens to every GM.

You've made a good point on another post that they should move Kubalik. I agree with that. He needs PP time and OTT shouldn't be giving that valuable time to Kubalik. Problem is Dorion is now darned either way. Trade Mathieu...that you signed or Kubalik who you just claimed you got value from in the Cat trade. I'm betting he's not smart enough to move Kubalik...too much pride there. He can scapegoat Mathieu because he didn't play at the level OTT thought he would.
