Opening Day if Batherson can play

Team: 2023-24 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 29, 2023
Published: Aug. 29, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think this is kosher? If Batherson is not suspended, Sens trade Kubalik and Thomson to Arizona for Bryan Little, Jenik and Carcone. Keep Little on IR until last day of camp. Sign Pinto and Sokolov plus Tatar on a PTO (with a contract in his pocket), On last day of camp, assign Greig to Belleville for the day and move Little to LTIR so the ACSL is under but close to 83.5m. Then sign Tatar 1 X 2.5 plus bring Greig back up (using about 60% of Little's LTIR cap relief).

Batherson is playing. They would not be promoting him for season tickets, he wouldn’t be making comments about switching to LW and talking the way he is if there was a chance he’d be suspended.

Interesting, but LTIR does not allow you to spend over the cap (the salaries on LTIR are not counted against the cap) so I don’t see how this plan flies

AZ is fine with this - a bottom 6 W (on last year) can TDL and a RD AHL prospect for a AHLer that wants a trade, LTIR (on last year) and AHLer (carcone did lead AHL in scoring)

OTT saves 1.7m kubalik -> carcone

If he was involved in the WJC thing the team would know and would have bought him out for purposes of terminating the contract and he would be in Russia the next week in the KHL

They’d be stupid to buy out one of the better contracts and wingers on their team.

How much of a choice do you have if one of your guys tag teamed some girl that didnt want it. Imagine the heat the sens would take if the public ever knew for sure it was him. I agree he is very good but for publicity and PR i feel like you would have to

By no means is what happened excusable, but if this occurred before they were in the league and they haven’t been criminally prosecuted, unless they were under contract at that time and bound to some sort of morals or ethics clause, I don’t see how the NHL has standing. Only more problems come from this when the players union gets involved and it further devolves into a debacle. Then you end up dragging this out in the public eye even further. Not something new ownership in Ottawa would like. What happens if there are players who’ve got they’re names on the cup, do you remove their names and boot all of them out of the league. I can’t see an easy or good solution to any of this. Ideally stuff like this would never happen in the world. No matter what happens, Ottawa is gonna take heat for this.

Not saying hes a compareable player but Mitchell Miller did his stuff before he was under contract and he got booted and booed and was a huge deal. Couldn't imagine what it would be like if Batherson did do it and got away with it. I do understand what you're saying though, but what do you think they would do for a consequence because suspending them isnt really fair either

I’m genuinely not sure. Miller wasn’t drafted and this came about. I’m not sure what the precedent here would be for a player who’s already been in the league for 5 years already. I just don’t see how the players union will stand by and let them get railroaded for this. Cause then it sets precedent to open up a huge can of worms into other players as well. That’ll only bring more negative attention and spotlight to the league than there already is. They can’t do nothing, but I’m not sure what the solution here would be. Suspension or termination of contract each have their negatives and positives.

If you could explain to me how the cap works and if it works, I think that this could be a very solid deal with great potential for both sides.

Jan Jenik and Lassi Thompson are pretty much both change of scenery candidates who could both be very promising.

Carcone is depth for Ottawa and Little is LTIRetired.

Kubalik is a very good buy low sell high candidate for Arizona that will help Ottawa clear cap short turn.

Mitchell Miller is a different scenario because Boston signed him knowing what he had done. Which is inexcusable.

Ottawa on the other hand would have signed and drafted Batherson without knowing. Thus they can claim they didn't know.

It's a very delicate situation to say the least.

Oh yeah they would have terminated the contract or even buy him out if that was the case. They wouldn’t be in a tough cap situation at all and would have signed Tatar or someone else already

Yeah but the poster talked about the hypothetical that they already knew (which they most likely do by now, example Formenton hasn’t been extended for the second year and is deeply needed)
