I went with Orr since he changed how Defense is played, Wayne couldn't win a Cup on the Kings... Though Oilers won a Cup without him, Messier even won the Cup on Rangers to break the 1940 Hex
. Looking at many of those Oiler teams are stacked with HOFers. Though it wasn't enough to beat the Islanders when on their way to 4 Cups in a row haha
.
ahead of Gretzky though?
Sure its not even close, Wayne would be first to admit Bobby Orr is better than him by far. Injuries hurt Orr or he would have been even better, he was a 2 way player, Wayne was a 1 way liability on Defense... Wayne needed people to protect him, Orr had a high of 133 PMs in only 67 games just to give an idea. Orr was shy, private, he would hide from the media in the locker room or outright avoid them. I'll give an example of a few stats related to Orr just to put things in perspective remember he was playing at a tougher time... OIlers had the NHL change penalty rule that was changed back, since they were so much better they would get things to become 4-4 to take advantage of it by drawing a penalty so it would become 4 on 4 like the rules are sorta again today...
Bobby Orr 37 Goals, 102 Assists, 139 Points with a +124 in 70/71 in only 78 games
.
Bobby Orr 46 Goals, 89 Assists, 135 Points with a +80 in 74/75 in 80 games
.
OHA totals 193 Games, 107 Goals, 173 Assists, 280 Points playing against Men as a boy mostly
...
NHL totals 657 Games, 270 Goals, 645 Assists, 915 Points with a +597 which I think omits his rookie season, he had 953 PMs too
.
He had a few records that could look up though its too insane to even speak of
.
Post Season his best year was 15 Games, 5 Goals, 19 Assists with 24 Points...
Career Post Season he had in 74 Games, 26 Goals, 66 Assists with 92 Points...
Even in OHA 29 Post Season Games he had 9 Goals, 32 Assists for 41 Points...
He even had 6 years in a row over 100 points for a D-man... D-men tend to play a lot more than forwards so its even more impressive... I"d probably vote for Mike Bossy or Super Mario over Wayne too
. I doubt many if any on here got to see Orr play or even remember him if they do... Being on the Bruins don't help matters either, if he was on say Montreal or some other team this wouldn't even be a close vote he would have them all
. Wayne ha been a - player even with having some high point totals which shouldn't happen regardless of what think of that stat... He was a Lefty shot so today I can't think of anybody even close to his production... If Wonder Paul Coffey broke his goal record with 48, he's also had 7 points in a single game which back then was really impressive 3 goals/4 assists
. His 270 Goals as a D-man was broken by some guy Dennis Potvin if wonder too
. I wonder how may hat tricks he had as a D-man
