Interesting.

Same here, Garak; same here... I'm not sure what to make of this trade! Plusses and minuses, both...

On the one hand, Murph is better than Myers, costs less (for a year), and over these next three years (or so) he seems very important to mentoring all the kids we have coming into the Hawks' D.

On the other, Myers isn't THAT bad (better than Zaitsev; I know that's not saying much), he'd only be around (at least on his current contract) at this higher price for a year. Murphy's absence and Myers' expiring contract afford the Hawks more flexibility. (Perhaps Myers could be re-signed for less for a couple years, after this season?) Additionally, Myers comes with a RD prospect (of which we have hardly any in our system), AND - most importantly - a first round pick. And we'd get that 1st rounder without having to retain any of Murphy's cap hit.

I may be sticking my neck out here, but I think the Hawks accept this trade. We could pick up another RD vet off the waiver wire or otherwise at the beginning of this season, if we think we still want more vet presence to teach the kids.

Yeah. Pretty much my thought process, too.

If Reinhart comes with an extension that includes a hometown discount for the Canucks I’d probably make that trade otherwise it’s a no. As for the Murphy trade it kinda makes sense but I’d rather Vancouver just get through the last year of Myers and replace him with someone in free agency and keep the 1st

Not a big fan of Woo as a prospect and would prefer rolling the dice on Filip Johanson as the RHD 23 year old prospect coming back, even if the Hawks need to add a little sweetener going back. I like the basic premise of the deal. Murphy should be worth in the neighborhood of a late 1st (or the Hawks are not trading him and will lean on him as a mentor for their upcoming LHD prospects). Myers even at only 1 million real dollars is still a little bit of a cap dump due to 6 million in cap.

My counter would be Murphy + one of Sens '24 3rd or the '25 Hawks 3rd ('26 Hawks 3rd if the '25 goes to the Leafs) for Myers, '26 1st, and Filip Johanson. Hawks get the slightly better (in my mind) RHD prospect while the Nucks get to push the 1st back a year later and get a 3rd coming back.

I like your counter, wojo. I wasn't crazy about Woo, either; just don't know enough about the 'Nucks' prospect pool. If Johanson is that much preferred, then I'd run with your proposal, instead (i.e., get a better prospect by adding to what'd come from the Hawks).

Cheers!
