Canucks easily decline. They aren’t paying you a 2nd and a useful middle 6 player for the privilege to retain $3 mil on Schmidt.

I don't think Vancouver makes that trade even if there's no retention. Appleton is more overpaid than Garland (although Garland has higher overall cap), and Vancouver gives up what will likely be a middle of the round 2nd.
