So Vancouver has to retain for 3 years, gives up the best player in the trade, and gives up a 2nd. While getting a player nobody claimed, a decent defenseman, and a 4th liner owed $9M. Why on earth would they accept this?

Canucks aren’t retaining half and adding a 2nd to take on a cap dump and lose cap space in the trade

This definitely isn't the cup winning team and Vancouver isn't doing that unless you are sending them a minimum of 2 1sts

Ok so let me break this down -
Garland has requested the trade - his value was just cut in half
So far this preseason and three games, Mathue Joseph has proven to be competitive and, when given the time on ice, can play - no longer will the Sens pay to get rid of him
Brannstrom is a top 4 two way more offensive-minded player who can play both sides and something Canucks need
JBD is a big stay-at-home man who is a highly desired player who has no room in our current lineup but would benefit Canucks when they want to be competitive in a year or two - for cheap

Yes, Canucks will take on Garland's salary for three Canucks Roster players who can fill some serious holes. (Garland is the same player quality as Joseph at half the price.

Joseph PPG by season: 0.32, 0.43, 0.34, 0.19, 0.37
Joseph career PPG: 0.35

Garland PPG by season: 0.57, 0.68, 0.80, 0.57, 0.38
Garland career PPG: 0.60

Garland is also very good defensively. He’s a much better player than Joseph

I like Brannstrom, but he’s a borderline top 4 dman. A solid #4/5 dman. The Canucks don’t seem to want to play any LHDs on the right side though, so not sure he’d be a fit

If JBD was as desirable of a player as you said then he would have been claimed on waivers. He clearly doesn’t have much value (again I do like him though)

The main thing is the Canucks want to move Garland to clear cap. They aren’t retaining 50% on the clear best player in the trade, taking back a 3M cap dump 4th liner, as well as another 2M dman AND giving up a 2nd round pick

The 2nd is probably equal to the value of Brannstrom + JBD, which leaves a 50% retained Garland for Joseph. Considering it’s been rumoured Ottawa would have to add a 1st to dump Joseph, you’d have to add at least one 1st, and probably another 1st to acquire Garland with that much retention

Tyler Kleven is not ready enough to be better than Brannstrom, you need Brann for now. He is the only guy who can step in the top-4 if there is an injury and actually be good.

Mathieu Joseph is ELITE on the PK and his top speed creates havoc all over the ice. He has worked like a madman this summer and his shot is quite improved. He's going to put a season that will make his 2.95 AAV look like a bargain. He is more needed than Garland. With Norris and Pinto, and considering Greig is already a high quality Top-9 forward, there is absolutely no spot in the Top-9

It's a good deal for the Sens but not what they need to do. It is simply to trade Kubalik but no idea why it hasn't been done already outside of Dorion being clueless as usual.

Of course CF is going to tell you that it is an horrible trade because of how slow hockey fans in general are on getting updated on things outside of their own team. Some still think Brannstrom is a bust tears of joy

Your post was good until that. Joseph is not a 4th liner nor a "cap dump" in any way, shape, or form. Some teams might have wanted to bend Dorion over due to a specific cap crunch situation but luckily Sens have been high on Joseph for a long time so he made the right decision (doesn't happen that often)
