Joshua Roy leads AHL scoring as a rookie

Created by: jonh514
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 21, 2023
Published: Oct. 21, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
It's not all Doom and Gloom for the Habs. We knew the sheer volume of draft picks would lead to some lottery wins and we have our 1st one in Joshua Roy.

5 points last night in his 4th AHL game this season (hat trick)
9 points in 4 games to lead the AHL as a rookie (not sure if he's technically an AHL rookie cause he played 1 game last season, but he's a rookie by NHL standards)
This is the same kid that dominated in the world Juniors and who Connor Bedard called "the smartest player he has played with to date". That's how people used to think about Markov.

Habs have a good one in Roy and it's about time!

How many games until he gets called up?

Personally, I’d let him cook in the AHL, maybe get him in 10-15 games late in the season. Let him dominate the AHL then he can work towards making the roster next season, which I think he will.

I’d say get him 24 games in the NHL this year, and maybe he can contend for Calder next year

I hear you. But let's say he's maintaining a 2pts/game pace in the AHL after 20 games, is there really a point to keeping him there? 20 games generally shows you where a player is at, right?

I’d typically agree, but I think getting him more mins in the AHL, get him a rookie of the year trophy and likely some playoff games in the AHL will help him more than getting decent mins in the NHL. Not to mention, losing always sucks and I don’t expect the habs to win much this year, rather have him keep that confidence heading into next year on a winning Laval squad.

Yeah, I had hopes for the Habs, but after 3 games it looks bad.

Par for the course in a rebuild! They’ll get back to winning once the prospects start making their way into the squad! Add in another top pick and habs cupboard is very nicely stocked!

Chances are he won’t keep this pace for too long. I’d keep him in the AHL as long as possible so he can either keep dominating or even face some adversity at some point during the season. If he can go through a slump in the AHL and learn how to find his game again after that, it will be a valuable learning experience for him to make sure he’s ready for the NHL.
