Shower Thoughts

Team: 2023-24 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 24, 2023
Published: Oct. 24, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
WSH
  1. Barrie, Tyson
  2. Novak, Thomas
Additional Details:
Washington Perspective: The Caps get 3.5 million in cap relief this year, and upwards of 8 million next year (not including a Novak extension.) Barrie comes in to make the money work, plays out the year, and then walks in free agency, opening up a spot for Iorio next season. Novak slots in on the second line, and gets a two year bridge deal in the offseason to let the older contracts play themselves out.
NSH
  1. Kuznetsov, Evgeny ($1,800,000 retained)
  2. van Riemsdyk, Trevor
Additional Details:
Nashville Perspective: Trotz was a huge fan of Kuznetsov. A change of scenery could revitalize him, and if he gets back to his old self, $6 mil a year would be a steal. If not, it's only this year and next, not the end of the world. And TVR is a steady defenseman that can slot in on the second or third pair at a good price. With Fabbro and Carrier up, I wasn't sure if this would be of interest to Nashville. Preds and Caps fans, what picks would need to be added? And as always, you can tell me to kick rocks if you want to lol

I really don’t see this a beneficial for Nashville Kuznetsov (even with retention) has little value. I also prefer Barrie for TVR. Nashville would need a lot more value going their way to consider

No chance Nashville moves Novak for a declining and aging Kuzy. Just makes no sense.

NSH declines this in a heartbeat. NSH is in the middle of a re-tool/rebuild where the end goal is to ultimately get younger. While NSH has signed ROR and others who are older, they aren't fully there to score points, they are there to help lead and mentor the younger guys like Evangelista, Tomasino, and now Foudy.

NSH is out on any rumor involving Kuzy, and no matter how much Trotz liked him when he was coach for the Caps 6 years ago, now is likely a very different story outside how much he may like him as a person. A lot has happened in that time and Kuzy has undeniable regressed in that time. Regardless of how much Trotz liked him then, he isn't the player he used to be, and Trotz trading a cheap center with high offensive upside for a center who is on a massive contract and is regressing is just not a good idea and how much he likes shouldn't be motivation to go after him.

Regarding TVR, this is the exact opposite of what NSH would want, as NSH already has a logjam at defense anyway. This makes NSH older and NSH is looking to move defenseman out to make room for some of the younger defenseman like Fabbro and Livingstone.

This deal ultimately makes no sense for NSH in any way.

My dyslexic brain would've much preferred if you just wrote "kick rocks." Took me five minutes to get through that hahaha. But I see your points, fair enough!
