Huberdeau

Description
Question for Habs fans: I know its unlikely we keep this pace all year (Allen and Monty have been lights out), but if we do, we could actually be in a playoff spot. How are yall feeling about acquiring Huberdeau? Flames are looking rough and itd be the perfect occasion to dump Gallagher's contract. I know Huby hasnt been himself last year and in the first few games now, but he has truly elite upside and I feel like he could be back to his former self with Suzuki, Caufield and especially under MSL. We could also let Slaf grow his confidence in Laval without having to play Anderson on the top 6. If we're in a playoff spot come March, do we take the opportunity to sell high on Monahan, Allen, Savard and Dvorak? On the other hand we could get Huberdeau for basically a lesser cap dump than he is. I dont see this team going far in the playoffs, but it could be a great build up for next season.

It would cost so much for Calgary to trade Huberdeau. It's not happening.

It's the worst contract in the league.

Its a bad contract based of last season but theres tons of terrible contracts that are much worse

His line with Bennet and Duclair was one of the best in the league. There is maybe 5 200 foot, ppg+ players in this league. This is just bad faith at this point, agree to disagree.

I think you dont fundamentally understand how much he is making. He is the 8th highest paid forward in the league. There are 154 forwards with as many points as him this year and 96 who have as many points since the start of last year.

Even if ypu go back another year to his best career year hes outside the top 20.

So for a guy who plays 0 defense he hasnt been worth it.

Money is well spent elsewhere

Not gonna comment on value but will say this if we were in the playoffs race at Christmas or even the TDL then adding a player of Huberdeau's caliber would be huge. Also keep in mind that Price never said he would never play hockey again, what he did say is his knee can't handle the rigors of a full season,, he has his good days and bad days. This could mean that if the Habs make the playoffs then Price might return for the run, that seems very much like a Price thing to do, lay it all on the line for a shot at a cup. Maybe, we don't make such a move but maybe we would

I mean theres a lot of guys with like 3 years left on their deal who'll make more especially with the cap increasing. Draistatl, Petterson, Robertson, Matthews, Kaprizov, Nylander off the top of my head. Sure money can be spent better elsewhere but for now its the equivalent of Anderson and Gallagher who are producing at the same pace of a 60pts Huberdeau at worst (90 at best), but combined. And those guys mentionned would cost a lot more to acquire in terms of assets. Idk I just dont think it would be as bad as you make it seem.

I dont get your point, you said even if he scored 100pts you wouldnt want him

Correct. He had 100 meaningless points 2 years ago, last year he had the worst decline ever I think, and so if he gets 100 meaningless points for Calgary this year I wouldn’t take him for nothing. Can you dig it?

He’s played 90 games in Calgary. The best play he’s made was in a preseason game last year.

7yrs left for a player that looks like he’s lost it. Worst contract in the league.

Like you said he has a 8 year contract so it wouldnt be for a short playoff run. Like I said, the playoff run would be a nice build up for next year (when Hutson, Reinbacher, Roy, maybe Farrell get a spot) and the year after. And like Hughes said, "we have to believe we're closer", which is exactly what a playoff spot in the atlantic division after 2 years of rebuild would be.

Maybe we should just go after reclamation projects like Dach and Newhook, but for now Dach is injury prone and Newhook doesnt look like he'll be a ppg player, which you need to be a contender. Huberdeau was literally a Hart nominee a year and a half ago. If its nonsense, you really think sticking with this core without taking risks is the way to go? What would you do instead, if we actually are in a playoff spot in march?

I can't stand such a shortsighted analysis after 9 games. Habs won't be making the playoffs this year, Dach can have a great career even if he's injured right now and there is no way to predict Newhook's best production when he's only 22 years old.

Rebuilding is simple:
1. Tank and acquire high potential prospects (3-5 years)
2. Develop talent (5-8 years including step 1) ---- HABS ARE HERE
3. Sign UFAs to plug holes and and make a playoff push ---- DET, OTT and BUF are here
4. Trade away futures at TDL to become a contender

By trading for Huberdeau, you are trying to push the rebuild from step 2 to step 3, but it doesnt work that way since the core still needs time to develop. Even the captain isn't 25 years old yet! We need to wait 2-3 years that Dach, newhook, Reinbacher, Hutson, Ghule, Roy, etc, etc get closer to their prime. And by that time, Huberdeau will be an overpaid 33 years old on the way down. That's what KH is explaining over and over again.

What if,by some miracle, Habs are in a playoff spot in 5 months? You stick to the plan without trading away high potential assets. They would get eliminated in the 1st round anyway, with or without adding players.
