Hockeys Hardest Rebuild 24-25

Description
The last time I saw a team this bad was the 1974 Caps. Mike Grier has one heck of a job in front of him.

The off-season should start with a new head coach. Quinn has done nothing wrong but it’s going to require a long term process to take this on and the players need a coach to grow with. I believe continuity and culture matter when building a winning franchise.I also believe San Jose has some better options for this process:

1 Ryan Warsofky- He’s already on the staff and is considered one of the bright up and coming minds in coaching. I think the easiest solution is to promote him and let the team grow with him.

2 Marco Sturm- He’s a significant name in the franchise’s history and more importantly he’s already a head coach with the Ontario Reign. He would be a solid hire.

3 Jay Woodcroft- I think the end is best for him in Edmonton and that’s probably best for him and the Oilers. He was an assistant for several years in SJ and he’s much better suited for this kind of project than the win now demands of Edmonton.

4.Joel Ward- Another former Shark who’s now an assistant in Vegas. He would fit with the proceed and time table this will take.

5 Rob Zettler- Another former Shark and a former assistant coach with them as well, who’s now an assistant in Tampa. This seems highly unlikely, which is why I have him 5th. Ideally he could come back as an assistant again.

As far as culture goes, get Joe Thornton back with the team in some capacity. He’s too important to the franchise and the fans. Likewise, the same should be true for Burns when his career is finished. Another former Shark I would want to see involved in some capacity is Jonathan Cheecho. I’m not sure what his relationship with the organization is now, but he could be valuable to them in this process.

As far as the trades go, moving Duclair this season for the best possible return is a must. He’s too valuable to not use to acquire some kind of futures. Moving Hertl seems like a wise move as well given he has plenty of value and that contract is not a problem if San Jose can take back enough salary. I chose Dallas for a fit and an example of what it would take. Also, for goalies I would be looking for a dump like Campbell or Binnington. I believe Campbell will be bought out this summer, so I added him as a UFA. Waiver acquisitions and short term veteran UFAs much like Chicago did should be the way for filling out the roster for next season.

A few good games in October don’t make up for over a season of bad play. Binnington has no value and is one of several goalies that could be dumped to save millions. Goalie value is at an all time low and the new model has been go cheap unless you have a sure thing.

Thing is the blues have no reason to get rid of him. Hofer isn't ready to be the starter and we would ruin his development by making him the starter. We need Binnington more than we need Granlund and Benning. We have no need for those 2 players but we still have a need for Binnington.

And Celebrini is no Bedard. This will be a long process for you and I’m glad you have an owner with deep pockets.

I think we will start pushing again around 25/26

Yeah I looked at their roster and yeah, the only guy with any sort of value is Tomas Hertl

The problem is they can't retain on more than 1 more guy which prevents them from getting deadline value out of more than like 1 vet

Duclair scored 31 goals the last time he played a full season on a good team. That’s easily worth a late 1st to a team trying to win a cup. And Arvidsson is going to miss most of this season after back surgery.

ok so maybe you could say he was worth a 1st last year. Teams don't pay for a rental on last year's results if that player then produces f all the year after, regardless of how bad their team is

A guy who scored 31 goals last time he played a season on a good team should be worth around the 30th pick in the draft. That’s a fair price. Hertl’s contract is not bad when you look at it in a few years with a cap at 90 plus million.

Don’t you mean if he plays on the best offensive team and has a shooting percentage 50% higher than his career average? Get real bro, if DuClair was worth a 1st he wouldn’t be on his 7th NHL team you’re making it like him scoring 30 goals and s the norm when it is decidedly not. Except the only teams interested in Hertl are up against the cap now and have their own free agents to worry about re-signing, and 6 assets is a straight pipe dream, I mean I could see if some of them were complete cap dumps but guys like Faksa are at least functional NHL players.

Faksa and Marchment are not valuable, so that’s over 7 million in dead money that’s going out the door. Hertl is valuable and is certainly worth a 1st. What else they’d get is up for debate and it may very well be lower than what I proposed but he would be worth a 1st easily. Karlsson even got a 1st with a long injury history and a bad contract. Hertl’s contract isn’t so bad given it’s long term with a rising cap coming.

Faksa is one of our better defensive forwards for the Stars and Marchment brings some sandpaper to the lineup which Hertl does not. I'm not saying Hertl is not a decent player I just think you have over valued him and if anyone is going to give up a 1st round pick for him I don't see it being Dallas.
