If that's the case, trade Marner for tons of assets and get a star defensemen... IDK who, but the Leafs should use 3/4 of their assets from Marner on a good defensemen and 2 middle 6 forwards and could have a defensive core of:

Rielly-Brodie
Star-Tanev
McCabe-Lilly
Zadorov

Which sounds super intriguing

Marner got a NMC

So yea hes not going anywhere

Hes from Toronto, loves being here, and was a Selke finalist, moving him is a no no and since hes from here and loves it he wont waive it lul

Lmao are u on drugs? Nylander is getting 11.5-12 and Marner is getting 12.5-13 . Marner is also negotiating a year later when the cap will be at 90

Keep dreaming, Marner shouldn't get more than what he's getting rn, Nylander won't get more than 10 bc the Leafs can't afford to have a winning mentality with 4 guys making more than 10, even for 1 year

Then move Nylander if he won't budge under 10.5... Should get Marner return anyway...

What the leafs can afford doesn’t matter. If you lowball either they’re going to free agency

Nah 10.5 I would give at max sure it could be a headache but JT comes off the books the season after

Leafs are gonna have cap space this summer and next year to do some real dmg

But yea to me for both sides 10.25m x 8 years perfect

Cool... If Marner really wants to stay, he'll take a discount... And Nylander can go to FA, or vice versa... Not expecting either to and then tell Marner to waive if he doesn't plan on staying...

Sure... But don't like the idea of having 2 10 mill+ wingers on top of 2 10 mill+ centres...

On the bright side, we aren't paying 3 5 million dollar player 8 mill... Unlike a certain team

With the cap going up and with most of the guys being rentals Leafs are gonna have cash to burn this and next summer. Having 4 guys wont be pretty but its doable with room to improve the Dcore or goaltending depending on what we see with Woll

As to me 10.25m allows for both sides to get what they want and ensures if Willy returns to normal outside this contract year we dont go why we paying an 80 point guy 11+m lul.

I think They should work on a Sammy deal in the 3 mill range right away to solidify this tandem, if they sign Willy to 10.25, won't be completely mad at it, resign Bert and tell Domi to take a 2.5/6 year deal, sign Lilly in the 2.5 range, hopefully get Pesce and resign Z and Tanev... Then have Minten, Robo and Cowan make the team and look for a depth option in FA...

Idk if Sammy is back next year. Someone may give him 5m like we saw with other goalies

Who knows though all depends on Woll

But yea there are options

They probs have contingency plans for certain things its a wait and see

He walks to free agency if you offer him 10 mill. Toronto taxes are not the same as those places. You need to offer him 11.5 at least

You are just dying to see it happen eh? Hilarious that Nylander has been overpaid and soft according to every non leaf fan and half of leaf fans and now all those non leafers say he's worth 11 because they are absolutely praying to see him go to the open market and sign him. Hilarious

He’s better than Marner. He’s def proving his worth this year and he’s been the best player in the playoffs

Nobody in FA is giving him more than 10m especially a non competitor

Gaudreau walked to free agency and made 9.75m after CGY offered him 10.5m he had 115 points.

Tkachuck took 9.5m in a sign and trade had 104 points

Nobody is giving Nylander 11m even with the cap going up besides a non competitor and Willy dont want to go to a non competitor

Hes not worth more than Pastranak and he does not play defense like Marner

Based on the comparable 10m x 8 years is the highest

It's all moot anyways. They are negotiating and getting closer by the day. Treliving by now knows he messed up by not getting him signed before the season started so I imagine he's bent a lot. Likely getting close to a finalized deal.

That was an offersheet before covid ****ed over the league with a flat cap and yea he was offered but didnt take it why wanted to be a Leaf. Also CBJ no competitive barely scaped into playoffs via tournament.

Were in a different time now, Sure its going up but not as high as it was projected years ago.

Willy is good but hes not good enough to be the highest paid wing in the NHL there are guys rn ahead of him making 10m or less. Now there is Pasta and Marner but they be better in their own way.

It's a cap percentage thing though, the actual cap hit is sort of irrelevant. Nylander is proving how good he is and I honestly believe him when he says it's not about the contract year. He's just grown into who he is and there is still more to come. Give him 10.5 or 11, it doesn't matter, he's a crazy good player.

Take the Pastrnak contract , add a cap inflation and a bit more to account for Ontario taxes

Bonus money trumps taxes. This has been widely reported. TO will give him only bonus money, almost no one else can do that and it's a huge advantage. As big as low taxes.

The "right" move IMO is to trade Marner. F his NTC, I would go into next off-season and just say we are trading you. If we don't have a deal by training camp just stay home and watch. Good luck getting paid after sitting out a year.

Nylander is miles better offensively and as much as I want any offensive talent to be a 2-way guy. I hate the argument that Marner is worth more cause he can play the PK.

What the hell do we pay Kampf $2.4M to do then?. I can find way better PK guys than Marner for $1M. Lafferty was one and we just trade him away and don't say SHGs are something only Marner can do, Lafferty had more.

I don't love Sens fans but this Sens fan has more logic then the Leafs ones in this thread.

If we trade Marner I'd comfortably do $11Mx6 or $11.5M x5 for Nylander.

I don’t think it will be 8 years or 12M if he extends but based on what the Leafs are (over)paying their “elite” guys why not ummm…
5 years at 11.2M

I say Vancouver would pay that or even a little more, somehow…other teams as well…

In terms of offence and overall game I think he hasn’t hit his ceiling

Sign him up Tre, 5 years at 11M and then dump Marner in the summer.

They are not overpaying their elite guys. They are paying them what they deserved at the time they signed. Cap percentage is the key number to look at. Matthews coming deal is actually a smaller cap percentage than McDavid signed for when he got 12.5x8.

1 year is the important thing. Maybe they take a step back next year and then come back with a lot more space the year after when JT is making 7 or less.

He didnt really mess up at all as what if Willy had his worst season 75 points

10m would have looked really bad lul.

In general contract years make players look better than they actually are

Got to tread the waters carefully as overpaying is not wise. He to me once this is settled is an 80-90 point guy 10.25m x 8 years is perfect for him as then he will be getting more than

Tkachuck
Stone
Kucherov
Rantanen
Gaudreau
Ovechkin
Kapriszov

If you've listened to Nylander talk it's very clear he has no intention of leaving Toronto. He's happy there. Team and player agent are negotiating.

Everyone on CFACGM was so sure Larkin was leaving Detroit. Robertson was leaving Dallas. Hagel was leaving Tampa. All 3 re-signed with their teams.

Hey I put over in brackets meaning up to interpretation, for me they are not overpaying per guy…but paying too much for the same…high regular season points and still unproven playoff guys

Anyone who's been watching Nylander should have seen this coming. When he's on, he's one of the best players in the world. His problem has always been consistency and it's been better each year. I said this many times, what does it look like when (never if) he puts all his talent together with a full year of consistency? Well this is what you have. An absolute dominant player who can take over a game at any moment.

This isn't luck, it's not him playing for a contract or any other made up excuse people have to undervalue him, it's just his growth as a player. I don't think this will be his best year either. There are some moments this season where he's just pushed guys out of his way, and I think that is going to morph into more anger and eventually he'll add a little bit of violence to his work along the boards.

If Treliving could have signed him for 9.5 before the season when he was saying less than 9, he messed up. And from all accounts that is exactly what happened. Now he has no leverage. Treliving sucks, it's beyond clear by now. Great work Shanahan!

These same people have been adamant every year that all or at least one of the core 4 was going to have to leave or want to leave and every year they are proven wrong. It's beyond silly at this point
