Initial Creation Date: Nov. 19, 2023

Description
Idea swaps Zegras for Laine with some minor side pieces. This would give Columbus a one two punch of Fantilli Zegras solving their top 6 C question for years to come. Would provide Anaheim with the scoring RW they don't have.

I don't think Anaheim should do this. If they decide to trade Zegras they should get more value. They could probably get a top 6 winger that can actually has something other than a great shot

Zegras > Laine, No way does Pat Verbeek make that trade.

Boston should keep the picks. I don’t believe Ilya is a massive depth benefit at all’s

Valid opinion. The question becomes this, Anaheim needs a 1RW and a true 1RD. A 1RD is probably available in this year's draft, and Columbus seems uninterested in giving up Jiricek.

So knowing we need a 1RW that's a shooter, who's a better match? Zegras doesn't seem to mesh well with Leo, so does he get out at 2LW on McTavish's wing?

Then Columbus can add to balance the deal. Maybe it's Bowvist instead of Peeked if Anaheim thinks Jamie is not going to pan out. The main body of the trade can work with some nuanced details.

the last two years laine has been far more of a playmaker than a sniper, but still has the elite shot. he's an offensive dual threat and has improved greatly in the defensive zone.

he's off to a slow start on a team that's off to a slow start. zegras is off to an even worse start on a team that's come out of the gate sprinting. laine fits better with anaheim's roster than he does here, and zegras fits better here than laine does. the trade makes plenty of sense.

The Ducks are paying Terry 7M to be a 1RW so what they need is a 1LW that compliments both Terry and Carlsson. You can make the case that the 1LW guy isn't Zegras but we've seen that in action for like 4 games thus far.

I think you are cutting it way short, way soon on Zegras on the wing. Also, Laine is a yearly "needs a fresh start" candidate. No reason to think he's going to fit the Anaheim roster any better than he does in Columbus or did in Winnipeg.

Just my $0.02.

Yeah, it's too soon to throw in the towel on Zegras being with the team, but as opposed to the usual grab bag of random crap that MTL AGMs keep throwing our way, I felt like this one actually made sense for both teams, so I figured it's worth exploring. I'm also not looking at either Z or Laine as "fresh start" candidates. I recognize that Laine is a hugely talentented, and huge, scoring RW, the exact kind of player that Verbeek likes, and would pair with Carlsson to create a monster scoring line.

However, I disagree that Terry is going to be our 1RW long term, I think we need a true 1RW star player, and LW we can fill in easily either internally with supporting cast or through free agency, given LW are the easiest position to fill out. In a couple of years, 7 million will be 2nd line pay, so while he is our 1RW, it's a bargain deal, but when he gets pushed down, it'll be appropriate for what he's doing.

I don't know about that. Right now it's quite unusual for any team to be spending the kind of money you are talking about on wingers. You're kind of in the 7M for Terry plus 9M for a superstar, plus 6.25M for Killorn and then probably a cheap contract to fill out the last spot for 24-ish million on top 6 wingers.

There are odd teams like Minnesota that pay wingers instead of centers but I just don't see that as a cup winning formula. But who knows with the cap rising a whole bunch makes for different dynamic... how can I assume to know what will be "normal" in a few years.

I don't really factor Killorn into my calculations as he's a transitional piece. We overpaid him for his own ice production to get the intangibles that Verbeek wants to instill in the room. I really wish it had only been a three year deal, but it's done at this point.

I'm just not convinced a right side of Terry Strome is the answer long term. Even with Killorn being able to play the right side to add to the depth chart it's still iffy.
