What would you add to that to make it fair?

This is also assuming you guys can put Klingberg on LTIR after the trade to free up that money and after the season he is UFA

What is Calgary's motivation to make that deal? Liljegren is a good enough piece but he's been hurt and prior to that this season was rather mediocre, it feels like a handful of years ago when Travis Dermott was hyped up as the next big thing when he's really just a 6th D man who can't stay healthy. Liljegren shuold be better but he's getting to be on the older end of a prospect.

You're also not paying to dump Klingberg in this post. Calgary has no motivation to make the deal and the deal falls short in value,

Hawks are going to be fielding 3-4 rookies on defense for the rest of the year and need Murphy to provide some stability and mentorship. I think there's a price to move him this year, but I'd be looking for something similar to the McCabe deal last year: retain on Murph for a 1st (+/- some smaller pieces). Otherwise he's more valuable helpding Korch, Vlasic, Kaiser etc develop

You guys can put Kling on LTIR and save his cap money for the season then he is a UFA. I don’t think Lily gets hurt often and he isn’t a prospect. I think this is his 4th year with the team and he is a good shut down D in his own end but doesn’t put up offensive numbers, similar to Tanev and he is 24 yo

I’d offer a 1st instead of Niemela if Chi would like. I thought Chi would prefer a D who is almost NHL ready, putting up good numbers in the minors.

Brodie > Murphy, so this one is completely nonsensical

Why would the Leafs downgrade D corps this year while also sacrificing one of their best (& only D) prospects?

I guess it’s a difference of opinion. I feel Murphy is an upgrade. He won’t have the numbers of Brodie plus/minus wise because of the teams he has played on. He is taller, heavier, more offensive, much more physical, younger and a better cap hit hence the reason I put in Niemela

Calgary doesn't need to do that though. Liljegren would definitely draw a ton of interest, no doubt, I think he needs to be back and playing though before teams start moving for him. I also think that other teams could offer better fits for Calgary and their direction. GM's are weird and like to have pieces that they develop, it's why you see teams that are retooling make moves for guys that are a year out of their draft year and have a ton of runway to be moulded by their organizations. If the Flames are looking for a "hockey trade" then Liljegren makes a ton of sense, if they're looking to overhaul their roster and try reset their competitive window in a couple years or ideally when they open a new rink I think they target high end picks or younger prospects.

Gudbranson & Chiarot hit all those same attributes - you want trade Brodie for those pylons too? And add a top prospect?
Brodie is by far a better defender than all them; really not even close - Brodie is one of the best in the league.
And more offense? Don’t think so…

CHI declines. It just isn't a package they would be interested in. An old pending UFA is worth nothing to CHI, and an undersized offensive RHD that is almost 4 years out from his draft and still can't make an NHL roster isn't very interesting to a GM who has a clear affinity for large bodied defenders.
