Not sure provorov is needed and can’t see the leafs spending 2 firsts again this year leaves them running on fumes for the next 2 years

What interest would either of those players be to the Flames? This is just picking off the bottom of the Leafs pile and calling it value.

I doubt the Flames will get big returns when trading either of these guys. Getting a 1st and a 3rd is a good base to start from, and very little needs to be added after that.

For both guys?! Retained?! You're out of your mind. Ryan Pike who is in tune with everything Flames said there are 16 teams scouting the Flames/Stars game tomorrow. If you don't think 15 teams beat this offer you are dreaming. This is just throwing the Leafs a favour for fun in this post. The players stink, the pick will be close to as low in the round as they get offered and the rest is all just nonsense.

Conroy dealt a 30 goal 70 point guy ahead of the season for peanuts. He's inexperienced, so there's that element. Also, the Flames will have to retain if they want to trade these guys because all the contenders are tight to the cap, so they won't get anything extra for the retention. It's baked in the deal.

Again, we have to remember one guy is a 5D and the other is always an injury risk who has played 82 games only once in his career, so no team is going to overpay to get them.

Yeah and Brad Treliving dealt an MVP candidate for a guy who scores 50 points a year and a top 4 d-man. It's really easy to spin trades poorly if you ignore the market context. I've seen the exact same package in these trades over and over, it's not going to cut it if you have to compete with other teams for the same players. The Flames would be stupid to package any of the d-men together when they could get more by trading them separately. They absolutely could get a first for each of those guys, worth it or not.

They're not getting a 1st for Zadorov alone.

That said he was not negotiating a deal and the team said they have priorities before him, he went and got a team controlled player and a pick. Calgary got what they needed, New Jersey got what they needed, you see how that works?? This deal above, Toronto gets everything they need and Calgary gets nothing they need. If a cap strapped team wants these guys there are plenty of ways to make it work as opposed to getting bent over a barrel.

Calgary doesn't have to trade Zadorov to a contender, he has no trade protection, no leverage and getting raked over the coals in a trade is worse than letting him play out his deal.

Tanev has missed 17 games since 2019.. all in 2022-23... That's less than Reilly, Giordano, Brodie, McCabe... I'm sure you talk about the injury risks those guys are too right??

Teams overpay for D all the time at the deadline, Chiarot, McCabe just recently even. Taking a bad deal is worse than taking no deal, the above is a really bad deal.

McCabe had 3 years left at 2 million, and the Chiarot deal was a mistake.

I think the Flames will get a 1st for Tanev, and a 3rd for Zadorov. This deal has both plus guys on the bubble who can make an impact in the bottom six should the Flames decide to move on from the likes of Dube, and others.

It'll be a shock. I think a 2nd is fair.

We'll see I suppose but the stupidity of GM's still blows me away, although it shouldn't. You're right, Zadorov's probably max worth a mid-round second, that doesn't mean that's what he'll fetch.

Pretty hopeful for Provorov. The Jackets gave up a 1st and 2nd for him and he's on pace for a career year in points. You're looking at matching what the Jackets paid for him at a minimum without the retention and that's if they were even interested in trading him.

Look at the standings. Blue Jackets are in a position of weakness if they want to make any trade.

In no way does term on that deal justify a middling D man that leaks chances that plays on the bottom pair being the only remaining piece from that trade. You just stated that Zadorov is a 5 so he's worth a third but two extra years of Zadorov would warrant a 1st? If only there was a GM that made deals with first round picks for the likes of Travis Hamonic or something.

Flames can get a 1st for Tanev, retained they can get more. Flames retaining on Zadorov and taking back money could pull a 1st from a contending team. Florida, Dallas, Winnipeg, Carolina, New Jersey, Seattle, Arizona, Detroit, Buffalo are all teams in, or close enough to the hunt, with either the ap space or they're accruing cap space big time to afford either Tanev or Zadorov or both. The Leafs are not in the drivers seat for this deal.

Couple of easy questions.
1. What benefit do the Flames get from making a deal now as opposed to waiting until more teams are in the mix with cap space, unless a team is drastically overpaying?
2. What benefit do you think the Flames get out of your deal above?
3. Why would the Flames deal both in the same trade for a really really bad return?

1. No benefit. This deal could be a deadline deal. Leafs can wait because they're good enough to be in a playoff spot without these guys.

2. 3 picks in the top 4 rounds (Chicago's 5th is more like late 4th round pick) is a very good return. Plus, McMann and Abruzzese are not plugs or aging vets. They can turn out to be something. When the Leafs traded Moore to the Kings 4 years ago he was a throw in. Look at him now. Leafs know how to develop players.

3. It's a really solid return.

1. Great, when more teams are in it, more teams have cap space, and players often get above market value, this is not that.

2. Even if they move Tanev for two picks in the top 60 that's a better return. If that's the game then the Leafs pick is really like a 2nd and the generosity of a 3rd in 2026 is really like a 4th right? Has to go both ways is that's how you see it. McMann and Abruzzese are plugs and over age if a team's retooling, they are no benefit to a team if they're retooling and clearly no benefit to a team contending cause they're in nearly every Leafs deal.

3. It ain't chief. Any team in on these guys beats that deal handily.

Why would they look to trade away one of their best performing players for picks if they want to improve how their season is going? All this while ignoring that Provorov was brought in specifically to bridge them to when Mateychuk and Svozil are NHL ready.

Plans change. Adjustments have to be made. Columbus should pursue a mini rebuild and recoup some picks.

Sounds to me like you couldn't really be bothered to think about how this actually makes sense for the Jackets and are only really thinking about the Toronto side that has them getting a completely unrealistic trade. Provorov at another 50% retained for two years while on a career best point pace would get a better return than a 2026 late 1st if he were actually on the trade block.

Columbus has plenty of prospects. What the need is to get them experience and surround them with steady vets. Like Provorov.
