Other way around. Oilers would be silly to turn that down. McLeod is easily replaceable and at a lower cap hit.
Montembeault fills their most pressing and immediate need while they also save some cap space.
Montreal has no need for McLeod.

So your telling me the oilers would refuse to give up a replacable 4c to acquire a young affordable goalie who has been in the Top 20 for GSAx for the last 2 season??

That 2nd trade is quite tragic for MTL

Caps do not need another aging forward we have plenty as is, nor do they give up our better futures for a player that will be replaced by much better youth in the next two years. If you want Lemay, Clark, or Allen you can have them.

Funnyhow folks minds works lol... but one thing for sure the habs dont need any more b prospects so if they cant pull off a major player like a nylander etc then they should just wait till the deadline and move Pearson, and monahan if the right deal comes and if not i would resign him. Trading monty for something we dont need is simply really trading for a trade sake... what is nice is that the players being called up like Struble now have looked good and Roy and hutson are developing nicely. we need like an eichel trade where we can give 4 prospects and a pick for the guy.

Lol McLeod isn't a replacement level player he is a very solid young 3C.

Montembeault is worth maybe a 3rd round pick. Maybe a 2nd if Edmonton is that desperate

I think McLeod is better than he's shown this year

Monahan can get more than a first.

Monty will get more than a 4c if he was available

Pens won’t want to get a worst player

I didn't say replacement level. I said replaceable. Derek Ryan can provide roughly the same but at better value, leaving an extra million to improve elsewhere.
A 2nd/3rd would be appropriate for Montembeault. Not debating that. It assumes he is even available of course.

Mcleod's value to Montreal however, is significantly lower than Montembeault's value to Montreal, while the same could be said for Edmonton, but that's not a certainty.

You are right about McLeod and wrong about Monty. But hey, 1 out of 2 ain't bad!

Monty has more value than his play because:

1) He only costs 1M
2) You can optionally negotiate a renewal with him in season
3) He is just entering his prime
4) He is happy to play in Canada

Edit: and his play is excellent!

McLeod was great in each of the past 2 seasons. He has had a slow start like all Oilers this year. McDavid is not worth less, so why is McLeod worth less all of a sudden?

1. Yes Monty cost 1M. That's why an actual relevant roster player should not need to be involved at all
2. An extension is not a marketable asset since conditional re-sign picks got abolished 3 years ago
3. Sure
4. Sure

He is playing well, not excellent. He would be under a much bigger spotlight on a team like Edmonton right now since they are in win now mode. He is not a game changing caliber goalie though.

I didn't say he was worth less because of recent performance either? Wrong reply maybe?
