Trading their 1sts (in the right deals) is the BEST thing the Oilers could do. It prevents them from drafting poorly and the players they acquire will have cap hits that prevent them from allocating space towards bad contracts. Trading for Ekholm was a good move. They got value for a change, helped their roster, and they didn't have the money to sign another Leafs cast-off (Holl) to a terrible contract.

Just because it hasn't happened, doesn't mean it can't happen. One year of Korpisalo got a 1st. PHI has no incentive to trade a 24-year-old good young goaltender. You have to overpay, especially if you are the Oilers and everyone knows you need goaltending.
