Defence in Shambles

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 29, 2023
Published: Nov. 29, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Gio looks to be out for a while now also. Lily will be out for very long time as well. And Klingberg is probably out for the year (we will know by Friday probably)

Add a temporary stop gap. He would be a great depth piece for this year and next. He is a very big body on a very good contract.

Thoughts?

I wonder what interest or benefit there is to MTL helping The Leafs, unless they’re absolutely fleecing them!????

MTL counters with Liljegren + a 3rd

Montreal has a ton of dmen and depth. They got Kovacevic off waivers last year. 3rd round pick is already generous for him.

Who cares!? It’s not really about value. They would happily Trade Kovacevik to SJ for a 3rd, but not TOR

What has TOR ever done to help MTL!? I don’t think MTL’s interested unless it’s an obvious over pay. IOW - They’re not a convenience store and they’re not going to Trade a Player for fair value within their Division

Sorry, but that’s how it works man

Gonna have to send another 3rd for Luke Schenn

Doesn't happen often but it does happen sometimes. Montreal is not a competitor this year, so it's less relevant.

Last trade between them was in 2018 at the deadline.

Kerby Rychel + Rinat Valiev + 2nd Round Pick to Montreal for Tomas Plekanec (50% retention) and Kyle Baun to Toronto.

Toronto trading for the turtleneck was a shock to us all.

As for Luke Schenn. I love me some Luke Schenn. But I ain't touching that contract. 2 years x 2m was what I wanted him for. 2.75m x 3 years... No thank you.

Not much here to motivate the Habs.

Habs don't need a 3rd in 2026.

Habs would need a second to consider moving Kovacevic to Toronto

They picked him up for free its true, but he is valuable to the Habs for all the reasons the Leafs do ... he's a very big body on a good contract. He quietly goes about his business in his role. A late 3rd in 2026 might, at best, yield a serviceable NHL defenceman in time for the 2030-31 season. Habs pass.

MTL still needs Kovacevic, absolutely no reason to trade him for a third to any team.

Just because we got him for free, and he doesn't get paid a whole lot, doesn't mean he doesn't carry value. Paycheck does not equal trade value, and in this seasons' tight cap, Kovacevic gets a value increase due to the low cap hit and steady play.

Your not even at the halfway point value wise of what the habs wpuld need to trade him.

He is eating big defensive minutes well, is right handed, big, and signed dirt cheap for more than this year.

They would need the equivalent of a late 1st early 2nd worth of value tp cpnsider moving him

So MTL trades away another Dman (a left handed one) for a way better return, keeps Kovacevic who's a great bang for their buck and leave Toronto's defense struggling as usual.
