Attempting to. I don't understand why he didn't sign with the AHL team

I don't understand the CBA stuff to make a very educated comment but if you want to attach some strings to the conspiracy board...

Are they getting a guy on a 2 way contract to prepare for a trade of an RD?

What are the implications of calling him up if he were signed to a 1 way AHL contract?

He was already on an AHL contract with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

You need an NHL contract to play for an NHL team, so they wouldn't have been able to call him up. A 2-way NHL contract gives players different salary depending on which league they're playing in.

This signing gives the Flames more depth, especially if they don't get roster players back after trading Hanifin and Tanev.

Makes me wonder if a trade is imminent or if they expect to get a Tanev trade done before the roster freeze. Could also be Hanifin to BOS I guess since they won't be giving back an NHL defender.

Thanks. Could they negotiate an NHL contract later after signing him to an AHL contract? I assume no, which is why they did it now?

Regardless, thank you for confirming my conspiracy theory. I shall now conduct myself as though it were fact and assume a Tanev trade is imminent.

Sent to the Wranglers, so not likely imminent, but getting close I would say. If it were imminent I would assume they just keep him up with the big club.

Just my read.

I wouldn't expect Tanev to be traded right away, this seems more like a reaction to trading Zadorov. With Big-Z out, someone from the Wranglers gets called up to the Flames full time. I wouldn't even expect to see Pysyk in a Flames jersey unless Solovyov, Oesterle, or DeSimone falter. Even then Poolman or Lyle might get a shot before Pysyk.

I was just leaning it to the conspiracy nut bit a little, I don't expect any imminent moves.

I missed the explanation of him being signed to the baby Penguins.

We were basically able to steal him by offering a 2 way contract?

Yup, a lot of these veteran players have an out clause if they get offered an NHL contract.

They couldn't sign him to an AHL contract since he already had one. Had to be an NHL contract to trigger an out clause.
They could have done it later but they likely have their reasons. Not necessarily an imminent trade.
They may simply want him to clear waivers and be ready to go, and they don't have to worry about him being claimed at an inconvenient time if his performance draws attention or another team has injuries. If he gets claimed now, they have time to try again with another player.
Of course it also could have been done in anticipation of a trade, it's just not the only plausible explanation.

Yeah, probably not imminent. Although they don't have to send him down right away (or at all) if he clears, they just need to send him down before 30 days or playing 10 NHL games. They could probably just keep him in the press box. For as long as Solo is up or someone gets traded he could be the 8th guy. If Solo does get sent down though, and then one of Tanev or Hanifin get traded, they won't need to return a defender in the trade, nor call up someone from the Wranglers, or scramble to find a replacement.

He's 100% getting through. If he was signed to just an AHL deal and then decided to bring him up he would have to go through waivers
