Feels like GMYz says no but maybe

Created by: DopeGM
Team: 2023-24 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 6, 2023

Description
I definitely don’t think a first and Broberg is sufficient for taking on three years of Campbell but maybe Kostin and Maatta are bad enough assets and YZ likes the idea of still building future assets during this great rebuilding year without giving up any current roster skaters.

This is terrible for Detroit, and a wildly in-accurate take on Kostin and Maata.

Terrible asset management for Detroit? In what way is it terrible. It’s terrible if carrying Campbell’s contract hurts them in the minors which I’m not convinced it does.

A $1.5M ish cap hit for three years for Broberg and a first is smart business as Detroit winds up the rebuild. Still, it’s a huge favour to Holland. Campbell’s contract is truly horrendous and worth about three firsts to take on. I’d rather have Broberg and shoot back Kostin but I really like Broberg.

I do like Maatta and agree dumping Chiarot would be the better move.

It’s terrible for the following:
1) waste of retention slot
2) Soup’s contract is not worth its weight in the problems that follow.
3) other teams will have interest in Reimer without any strings attached
4) Broberg would be a redundancy without being an improvement overall.

Kostin was acquired at the cost of SY doing Holland a favor (buying out Yamo). He has been a nice addition, and not a negative asset.

Maata was re-signed, and has been exactly as advertised in a steady, defensive role. He is also not a negative asset.

Broberg (lateral move at best)
Campbell (negative asset)
Presumably late first (pick 20-28?)

For

Reimer (improvement for EDM
Retainment (- for Detroit + for EDM)
Maata (improvement for EDM)
Kostin (EDM fan favorite)

Just a completely different opinion I guess:

Don’t see the retention spot as a factor whatsoever. One left and they aren’t trading for assets at this deadline and retaining.

Soup’s contract not “full of problems” assuming the Wings aren’t cash strapped. It’s an anchor no doubt but an anchor worth Broberg and a first, I’m arguing.

Reimer worth a 4th or so as a stand-alone asset. Essentially a useless return for a team with a prospect base this strong.

Agree Broberg not as valuable to the Wings given their killer LHS D pipeline. He’s a possible flip? Three way deal? He’s going to be a good player IMO.

Apologies if I’m wrong about Kostin. I went back to find the comment about Kostin being perhaps immature and a bad dressing room influence and couldn’t find it. But I did find Lalonde saying the healthy scratch discipline was a very minor issue. Like being late or something like that. So could be very wrong there which makes the whole trade value off.

I agree Chiarot is the better player to send in this deal. I’d rather keep Holl over Maatta though.

I would say the way that this is a bad trade for Detroit is not asset management / asset value and moreso that it is not the right signal to the team. It’s moreso saying “we’re still rebuilding” and it’s probably the wrong signal to send to the team and the fans.

Yzerman wanted to draft kostin, and wanted trade for him more than once. He will not reverse it.

Detroit looks like a really good team right now, and adding a guy like Kane to me signals that they think they can try and make some noise this year (still have some cap too).

There is no reason for them to take Campbell on.

IMO the only shot the oilers have to move Campbell is on to someone like Pittsburgh, Washington or SJS. Pens and Caps could be close to a rebuild and one of them may be willing to take on Campbell for assets. SJS isn't going to be good for quite a few years so they may also willingly eat his cap for a return. Outside that I just don't see any team willing to take that on. Tampa and NYI also probably close to rebuild, but both have goalies locked in at hefty contracts that EDM can't afford.

Kostin and Maata are roster players (see tonight’s game) and are not negative assets. I would be willing to deal Maata for very little so Edvinsson can get in, but Kostin is going nowhere. Please realize the way Klim was brought in just months ago.

Campbell is a boat anchor contract, not sure where you get the idea it only costs the wings 1.5M? Unless you’re mathing some subtraction there with this trade, but don’t bother. No matter how you swing this, Campbell is a massive cap load unless 50% retained, for any team.

Broberg has Filip Zadina level value in my opinion, I wouldn’t even take a flyer on him for free. We have about 5 better lhd prospects. I could do Campbell and 2 firsts for Maata and Reimer, but echoing some above comments, highly doubt Yzerman considers any such trade.

I just don't think taking Campbell and giving up the cap he'd occupy is something this team can do. The returns fine but next season when ray and mo make 16 million and not 2 we're gonna want the space

I actually did the math backwards in my head! $3.85M is the cap hit when he’s in the minors. Seems like Wings fans like all of Chiarot Maatta and Holl which is a little surprising… better to have all of them then the first and Broberg? I love the Wings’ direction but if I were the GM I would be ok with a little more asset aggregation. Again, I really like Broberg, so it’s extremely rose coloured glasses

Great point. If they have any room difficulties organically it’s a huge no go.
