Part 1 Mediocrity Continues until March

Created by: Pens3lieve
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 5, 2023
Published: Dec. 6, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This post assumes the Pens continue their below .500 trajectory and sit over 5 points out of a WC spot at the TDL, which is not hard to imagine happening if the power play continues to be awful, the goaltending and few players actually playing well regress, and other playoff-caliber teams begin to separate themselves from the pack.

-All pending UFAs with at least late-round-pick value get moved.
-All other non-core pieces are made available
-The Pens end up finishing bottom-10 in the league, thus they exercise their right to keep their 2024 1st round pick and opt to send their 2025 1st to San Jose

You can keep Nieto and Leafs will keep their 5th

Leafs have no use for another small forward

This is probably what will happen I think. Assume they'd trade Peterson as well and I think he'd bring back a 1st +

The Canucks have already stated that they don't plan on moving their 1st rounder, which means I doubt they would move it just to offload a player on an expiring contract who is playing ~18-20 minutes per night for them and is quite useful when put in the right situations. Is he overpaid? Yeah. Is he worth trading a high pick to dump cap at this point, not unless the return coming back tangibly upgrades the team.

shocking to no one, jeff carter declines. (plus no one wants him even at 50%)

Kings would need to move cap somehow, whether that's a player to the penguins, or a 3rd team they have basically no cap space. Even then they'd probably need a 3rd team to retain 1.5M on Jake.

The penguins are going to possibly be in a huge bind IF they become sellers this season.

Only 5 teams have $3M+ in cap space at the moment (CBJ, NSH, BUF, ANA, CHI) and I can't see any of them being buyers at the deadline on rentals.

If the pens sell they're going to need buyers in a playoff hunt to have significant cap on LTIR.

Jake, Pettersson and Ned will be your big three, any depth guy on final year as mentioned.

It's almost impossible to speculate on anything at this point with how tight most the divisions are and with how little cap space teams have.

if we move pettersson, then i feel it signals a bigger rebuild... hes turned into a legit 1st pairing defensive d-man and if dubas plans to keep this team competitive we don't move him... UNLESS he demands over like $6M or something crazy... but yeah it would be a mess if we are terrible this year...

Oh I don't doubt Petty's status as a legit 1st pairing guys. He's having another phenomenal year.

I just question what this year and the next 1-2 seasons hold.... The only real prospects the pens have right now are Yager and Pickering (maybe Poulin, but I'd like to see him have time this season in the NHL).

I can't see Yager being on the team until the 2025/26 season (maybe he gets a taste late next season assuming he's in the A). Pickering i'd guess the same for.

With such a lack of prospect depth I'm curious to see what Dubas does in that 1-2 season period. He's been honest about wanting to compete while restocking. So that to me says Pickering/Yager aren't moving and most likely neither is a 1st unless it benefits the tteam now and long term.

If the cap is $87.7M next season they'll have about $18-19M in space as things stand today i think, but if they don't make drastic moves this year that's some nice money to play with as they'd need a backup, 4 forwards and 2 defenseman (6/7th guy)

Yeah everything you just said I agree with and I’m exploring all of that 😂 rn with my part 2/3 posts that will be out in the next day or two… the cap space and flexibility will be there and yeah there will def be pieces we can move to speed up a rebuild/retool or whatever this quasi limbo state of being wild card competitive but not being a top team is…..

I do agree, but I think if we sell this TDL then we rebuild this offseason. Our chances will be worse and worse every year from here on out. If we aren't competitive this year don't see why management would think next year would be better
