Hanifin may be the best fit for the Leafs system

Created by: leafs101
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 7, 2023
Published: Dec. 7, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Play Lyubushkin 3rd pair mins but with Rielly similar to how the Leafs have paired him with pure stay at home bruisers in the past. Sundqvist for another trusted C option, Lindgren for another solid G option and to be the backup to Woll again next season. Greer adds some sandpaper to the 4th line but is good enough defensively.

Could entertain the argument that I'm around a 3rd ish round pick or equivalent prospect off on the Hanifin deal if he's extending, would entertain adding a prospect of that value but I think this is relatively realistic.

Interesting offer to Washington but I don't know if they gamble on an AHLer for a goalie at this point

deadline deal, if he keeps playing the way he is or even drops off just a bit its a solid cheap backup with another year of term.

Why not? It's not like this team is playoff bound, you already have kuemper and can just give a young guy a shot from deadline to offseason and if you want sign a backup then

fair maybe a different goalie prospects. Honestly I'm just of the thought train that we have 5 years left to win a cup and if the prospect isn't going to be a stud by say year 3 or maybe 4 of it I don't care if they get dealt. It's 5 years of win now

He could be up as soon as next year if not then definitely the year after but I would personally bring him up next year

I'll leave others to discuss trade values but the team you've constructed is both impressive and an improvement.

Thanks appreciate it. Yep don't think we'll ever get the values right here more about ballpark. Would like to get a better D than Boosh but no cap and he's at least shown he can play good enough with Mo, would also like to move Domi to the wing and get a more 2 way C but complicated as that would push Robertson out of the lineup when he's added some depth scoring as of late and, again no cap. Could maybe move Sammy and get another backup goalie for cheaper and use his cap to get that 2 way C but seems complicated.

Leafs aren’t going to carry 3 goalies for the year. With their tight cap situation that’s just poor management. If they’re going to bring in another backup (not a bad idea) then Samsonov would be on his way out somehow

I believe Hanafin is the dman the Leafs need to target even though he doesn't play the right side. I absolutely HATE giving up a 1st round pick for a player without term. This might be the exception. The re-sign might be $7.25 x 8 though.

Tanev is in the twilight of his career and plays so reckless that he has gotten injured way to often. I hope the older players and ones below 6'1" are avoided. The Leafs have enough good ones that it would only be lateral moves.

I was worried the Leafs might get Zadorov because he is huge and plays with snarl which the Leafs need BUT...he is a 3rd pairing dman on a Stanley Cup contending team. Making almost $4 MIL is expensive for that role.

I also looked at AJ Greer. He is 6'3" and can fight half decent. At 27 he is only now starting to stick as a 4th liner. Noah Gregor is a better skater, better offensive and throws the same number of hits (pro-rated). Gregor is only 6'0" and doesn't fight...so it depends on what we see wins games for the Leafs. I am genuinely torn on this one.

Going for a RHD trade of a lumbering, older player with retention I would see if we could pry Schenn out of Nashville. Schenn has a high hockey IQ, has gotten in peak physical shape, can complement Rielly's style perfect AND is a legitimate heavy weight fighter in today's NHL.

I am not sure about the goalie trade.

If we are trading for Sundqvist then we must replace Holmberg with Reeves....simply because I think it would be funny to have them traded for each other again. I would prefer Lafferty though. I heard he is worth Vancouver's 5th...

Very easy decline for the caps. Why would we move our cheap goalie who is putting up incredible numbers (the Arizona game excluded - whole team played like garbage) for essentially no return?

Because I am thinking the Capitals are willing to shop Darcy and not Lindgren. Lindgren is the capitals MVP this season (so far) and if they have any chance at being competitive they are riding it out with Charile

I think this a Lindgren offer the caps at least consider at the TDL if they're out of it. For fellow caps fans -- goalie prospects can be tricky to evaluate but Hildeby is 22 and putting up great numbers in the AHL -- would be an upgrade over Stevenson and Gibson. For leafs fans, Lindgren has been by almost every metric the best goalie in the league so far this year -- will he stay this hot? I doubt it, but at the very least he's a solid, cheap backup with an extra year.
