Brodie and Tanev are extremely comparable dmen. Tanev is a right shot, so his value may be a touch higher, but barely. No point getting rid of Brodie, just to replace him with Tanev.

Somehow adding Brodie is going to take Chicago from the cellar to the Cup? Yeah I didn't think so either so why would Chicago trade draft assets for an expiring contract? Also LD are the last thing this team needs. I don't care if he plays the right side sometimes, he's still left-handed. He has value to the right team. Chicago isn't the right team.

Tanev is the better defenseman now and has been throughout his career. However slight you perceive the difference between the two to be, I think you're missing out on the most crucial part in all of this, which is that we can acquire Tanev with retention, but can't pay to get retention for a player who's already on our team. So it's not only that Tanev has more value than Brodie all things being equal, it's that he has considerably more value to a cap crunched team where he'd being coming in at $2.75 mil less than Brodie, part of what would allow us to add another big piece on D as well (whether that's Hanifin or someone else).

So, in a world where there's no cap I'd love to keep Brodie in a smaller role, unfortunately that's not reality though. So that's why there's no point to just get rid of Brodie, but if you're replacing him with Tanev then there is a point, the point being the overall improvement to this backend that is necessary for our success.

I love when people post proposals that totally ignore a teams needs and competitive situation.

Hawks easily decline, no point in trading a 2nd round pick for a 33 year old on an expiring contract when you are a rebuilding team.
