Linemates mean very little when matthews was forced into a distributing role while he was hurt last season, he isn't a playmaking player. Flexing that your player got more points in more games than a player that was hurt the entire season with a hand injury preventing him from effectively doing the thing he designs his game around is a pretty flimsy argument. Also hughes was playing with Bratt and Meier you can't act like he was stapled to some terrible players like 2 ryan reaves on his wing. I just gave an example on how matthews is better defensively than hughes (who also gets caved in the circle) so unless you can come up with evidence that he actually is better defensively than matthews (Jfresh doesnt count) i will disregard what you are saying on his defense. I mentioned hits because hits are evidently a part of hockey and they help the team win by wearing down the opponent and forcing turnovers. Matthews had 8 more takeaways and 30 less giveaways than hughes. (Better defense) Matthews blocked more shots (Blocking shots often prevent shots from reaching your goaltender and therefore cause no scoring chances) so with all this you can make a pretty concrete argument matthews is better overall than hughes
Hughes most common linemate set in the playoffs was Palat and Haula.
Why Hughes is better than Matthews defensively??
Over the last 2 years 5v5:
Matthews allows 2.76 xGoals against/60 (again paired mostly with Selke finalist Marner). How can you have Marner and Matthews both be great defensively and yet they give up more chances than Jack?
Hughes allows 2.56 xGoals against/60.
But hey, matthews was quality defensively for 2 years of his 8 year career (20-21 and 21-22) so now the narrative will stick.
And jack hughes small and doesn't block shots so he must be bad defensively.
Jack Hughes dominates possession. You know the best way to not get scored on? It's to have the puck. The Jack Hughes line doesn't dump and chase. Jack skates the puck in.
It's why if you actually look into the numbers (per moneypuck)
Matthews has 8 defensive zone giveaways (the dangerous ones) this year 5v5. Jack has ZERO.
he had 19 last year 5v5: Jack had just 10.
You know what a hit means? It means the other team has the puck. You know what a blocked shot means. It means the other team has the puck.
Faceoffs again aren't particularly meaningful. Especially on a team like NJD who has Mcleod at 63%, Tierney at 58%, Lazar at 58%, Nico at 58%, Haula at 55% and Mercer at 51%.
51% matthews would be moving out of the way for faceoffs as well.
