As much as I wouldn’t want to, I believe you’d have to add in Wallinder or Johansson to the current package due to Hanifan being 26 and a longer term solution.

Maata would be the stop gap, and a cheap depth player for next season. Adds no value to the current trade outside of cap and roster.

Berggren as the nice young offensive piece.

1st rounder (Chance at lottery pick, would have to put top 10 protection)

Wallinder or Johansson as the D prospect to replace the loss of Hanifan long term.

Maybe ya. Hanifin is just a rental right now though so who knows.

So Yzerman gives up berggren and a lottery pick to rent Hanifin? Strong move!

Detroit isn't a playoff at the start of the season they were predicted to finish 7th in the Atlantic. I'm sorry but you don't add Holl, Petry and Ghost to a defense that already has Chariot and Maatta and expect to go to the playoffs. So yeah Detroit's pick is looking more and more likely to be a lottery pick. Hanifin is in the final year of his contract so it makes him a rental and just assuming that he will extend is just foolish. Even if Detroit makes the playoffs I wouldn't expect Yzerman to buy especially with some of the prospects we have. Patience is what Yzerman has preached since day one and he has stuck to the plan even thought has taken longer than expected. Why would he abandon that now? There is a direct correlation between teams who develop their own players and long term success.

Explain to me why Kane picked Detroit if there was no expectation to make the playoffs?

Last thing we need is to add another dman making 8+ per longterm when seider’s deal is coming up and possibly edvinsson will get big money a few years down the line and we have walman already and possibly resigning ghost since he’s meshed so we’ll and a ton of dmen prospects coming up
