Description
Among the experts and talking heads there seems to be an agreement that the Leafs defence when Healthy is not good enough to win. Im inclined to agree with this. Who are the leafs defence personal comparisons, Minnesota, Detroit,Arizona? Maybe ? Treliving has stated publicly he is looking to upgrade the defence and get bigger. 2nd topic is many talking heads have said the Leafs are looking at improving the 3rd line. So this post is to discuss possible targets and if people agree the leafs even need help via trade

Parayko is not available, and even if he was the Leafs do not have the trade capital to get him.

Parayko isn’t available none of the Seattle defenders are available leafs will not use a first on a forward so Jenner is unavailable and I pray the leafs don’t trade for risto plus he’s likely unavailable

U could possibly be right. Reports this week out of STL are saying almost everyone in STL is available. Obviously no one knows how reliable those reports are.
I would say u are correct with reguards to Seattle. It would probably take an overpay to get anyone with term out of there. Also the Tatar deal seem to suggest they still think they can find success and make the playoffs.
Personally i believe every veteran on CLB is available.
Ristolienen has been a different player in PHI and his underlying stats show he has become a valued player. It would likely be a similar price tag as pesce or Tanev as risto has term and i dont think the Leafs would do a deal for a player with term and money. I would be very surprised at a deal like this

Hes been good as far as underlying stats price might be a little to high for him as there will likely be multiple playoff teams looking for his services.

I would agree with the leafs lack of capital. However there are reports that everyone in STL is available. Obviously those report could be BS

Some really terrible options in here, the only ones worth while with cost and actually being good enough to improve the roster are tanev, walker and maybe pesce depending on what carolina is doing
The rest are either gonna cost way more than they are worth, have terrible contracts or are juata combo of those.

The previous Leafs regime were trying to build an offense based team, thinking they just had to put up one more goal than the other team did, that is the same mindset that the Oilers have been using since drafting McDavid and it has not worked out for either team. Personally I think gravitating towards a better balanced system will be the key, the problem is the contracts the previous regime gave out is hindering the required upgrades through the rest of the lineup and the role players being brought in don't balance the lineup very much. I think in order to make the required upgrades one of the core 4 is going to have to be moved out plus 2 or 3 supporting players like Brodie, Samsonov, Jarnkrok, Bertuzzi and Domi. All that being said here are the players I would move and the types of players I would bring in.

I personally think Tavares at 11 mil is severely overpaid for a 2C putting up between 70-90 points, Minnesota on the other hand may be interested in upgrading their center core enough to move JEE who imo would be a great add for Toronto as a 2C. Obviously JEE alone wouldn't get the deal done and Tavares would have to waive (which he probably won't) but it is a good starting point imo.

Next goes Brodie, I like Larsson on the top pairing with Reilly and I think adding in Dunn could be really interesting so trying to work something out with Seattle for their two centered around Brodie and Domi might be worth a look.

Tanev would be a great add to that top 4, so he would be my next target, a 1st and 3rd should get that done.

That leaves goaltending and the bottom 6 to upgrade and tbh if you could work that D out as I proposed the bottom line isn't as important to upgrade. So let's look at the goalies truth be told the Leafs need a number one guy, the problem is that the ones who were supposed to be available (Hart, Sarros, etc.) Are all on teams that are currently in playoff positions and might not fall out of the race, so who do you target? IMO, Merzilkins, he has been rumoured to be on the block and is a clear upgrade, so he would be my target.

Jenner is a good add to the 3rd line if you can swing it and then target a young winger like Ylonen or Heineman both look as though they have the same skillset as Lehkonen so adding one of them or a similar young guy with that skillset on a cheap deal would be ideal.

Those are the types of moves I personally would make, the trick is to make them and remain cap compliant, which I don't know that I have lol.

Yes an insider quest on overdrive mention possible STL changes after the disappointing Berube firing, paraykos name was mentioned as well as others. I apologize i cant remember if it was Piere Labrun or Chis Johnston. Also NHL trade rumours has reports of it. Again reports can be completely baseless and Paraykos name in trade rumours followed by nothing happening is nothing new.

Okay, well NHL trade rumors is garbage. Google found nothing by Johnston or LeBrun that mentioned Parayko in the last week. The only thing I found was this - https://www.nhltraderumors.me/2023/12/blues-rumors-2-potential-landing-spots.html - which is delusional clickbait nonsense. Put all of these "insiders" together, they probably can't combine for one tiny clue about the Blues. Army runs in stealth better than almost any GM, and these guys only really have great info on Canadian/monster market US teams half the time.

But just FYI, anyone who claims everyone is available in STL is a bald-faced liar. That's just pure undiluted BS.

Yeah leafs don’t want to pay the price tag risto would cost in my opinion he not enough of a difference maker

What defender are you going to give us back for Pesce? I wouldn't move Pesce without a defensemen coming back so that TDA doesn't play

Again, rumours are just that. If a leafs trade involving Parayko was to be talked about i believe the Blues would start with Nylander and they would want an extension in place and the leafs wouldnt want to do that. No one knows what will happen and if rumours are bs or not.

Also why wouldnt the Blues have several veteran players available??? Honest question. Do the blues/fans believe they can be a playoff team?

Likely none. But possibly Liljegren. A Pesce deal seems very difficult as the Canes are in win now. It would be like the Leafs trading Brodie. Canes Likely keep him as an own rental and make every attempt to resign him

I highly doubt the Blues would want Nylander, if only because he's a UFA who's going to want a huge raise. But let's be clear: rumors are actual pieces of information from an actual source. What most of these sites and guys do are not rumors. They try to start rumors for clickbait. That's not a rumor.

Having several veteran players available and having everyone available are two very different things.

Friedman has no clue. He just repeats things other reporters said or breaks out the wiggle words to spin BS. Every time he says something about the Blues, it's as wrong as can be. Pointing out that the Blues are one to watch in the trade market is a big fat DUH. Children who haven't been born yet already know that.

Toronto lacks the assets for most of these guys. Other team would out bid you and the rest of the league does not value the Marlies hall of famers as must as Leaf fans do

Saying that i believe the Blues would start with Nylander does not mean that i believe that Parayko is worth Nylander. U can ask for a million dollars for a 10cent house it doesnt mean u will get it.
