This is a totally disingenuous comment. Total disregard for age, contract, and position.
I agree Mercer has more value because age / potential / time to free agency and the original deal undervalued Mercer. The position piece is kind of a stretch. A 60 point winger who’s trending closer to 40 this year vs a top 10 (top 5 if I extend the sample size) goaltender isn’t exactly a premium position differential. NJD fans want to value him as a center, but he he hasn’t shown he is a capable one.
Ullmark and a second for Mercer and a cap dump of Vanacek is probably fair value even though I’d get why NJ would turn it down. Not every fair value deal works. I’d probably upgrade the second round pick to Lysell.
That said, It’s disingenuous that NJ fans minimize Ullmark’s ability and track record with the hope they could acquire him on the cheap. Everyone seems to be looking for an optimal deal and not paying attention to the fact that NJ’s goaltending is the primary reason they are underachieving and they aren’t alone.
If Ullmark is traded in a deal that’s “fair market” according to Jersey fans, it likely is not to a talented team that’s a threat to be a conference competitor. Jersey or Carolina would have to pay full freight or Boston can continue to watch two very good teams flail because of bad goaltending rather than helping them fix the problem.
At some point, I wonder if Jersey goes all in to acquire a goaltender or continues to underachieve. It doesn’t have to be Ullmark though I believe he is one of the best options out there.
Anyone competent would be an improvement and my bet is NJ will have to pay a premium to secure even that with the number of teams in the same situation as them. Curious to see what Gustavsson’s and Allen’s price will be
