If we arent rushing the rebuild why cant we keep taking on bad contracts

Description
Reports say that the hawks are not going to be going after a big free agent player this offseason and are planning on building through the draft. That’s fantastic that they are sticking with the plan and what not, but why can’t they take on some bad contracts and get draft capital like that. We don’t have any players on the roster that are worthy of a first round pick in a trade, and if we are rebuilding getting firsts is definitely still a priority despite how many we have coming.

I agree with your thought process but not the execution. I think both trades leave too much on the table for the Hawks. Selling too low is how Bowman wrecked the team.

We're soo injured right now. I don't mind taking a bad contract or two so we can have NHLers play, but I can't see trading away Murphy with no one coming back. I'd do that Campbell trade though. Doubt EDM would.

I would tweak both trades a bit. I would not include the Ott 3rd....Campbell contract is really bad like sniffing 2 1st on it's own bad and odds w/ McDavid is neither are going to be all that early and Mrazek has had a really good season and has some sort of value too. I would maybe throw in the NYR 4th in '25 and would consider making the '25 1st the '26

Toronto deal needs to be expanded to include a RHD going back to Chicago....think both teams would want that to some extent. Liljegren, Timmins, or Niemela would be the most interesting and the Hawks could probably send a young LHD back (as not all of Phillips/DelMastro/Allen/Kaiser will have a path to the NHL (especially with Vlassic looking solid this year in the NHL and Korchinski likely to grab another LHD NHL roster spot.

Hawks don't need to be sending picks back to Edmonton if they are sending Mrazak half retained. A 1st for Murphy half retained is selling low as well. Don't like that deal for the Hawks either.

I actually like the Leafs deal, we accept. I do doubt the Hawks retain but obviously a good touch
