Why you shouldnt trade for any Sharks

Created by: pavelski_tip_in
Team: 2023-24 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 6, 2024
Published: Jan. 6, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
These descriptions don't reflect the whole of the argument, but just the reasons not to trade for these Sharks players.

Cap considerations are largely ignored, but I tried to at least resemble fair values in trades.
Trades
1.
SJS
  1. Johansen, Ryan
  2. 2026 2nd round pick (COL)
COL
  1. Granlund, Mikael
Additional Details:
Granlund has been great for the Sharks, but isn't 2C caliber for a contender. He's notorious for playing poorly after being traded and won't carry a line on his own. Has an extra year left on his deal.
2.
SJS
  1. Frederic, Trent
  2. Geekie, Morgan
  3. Grzelcyk, Matt
  4. 2025 3rd round pick (BOS)
  5. 2026 1st round pick (BOS)
BOS
  1. Hertl, Tomas
Additional Details:
Hertl has 7 years left on his deal taking him to his age 37 season. Has had injury issues in the past. Is probably in the top 30 of centers in the league, but is not a cornerstone 1C.
3.
SJS
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (DET)
  2. 2025 4th round pick (BOS)
DET
  1. Sturm, Nico
Additional Details:
Sturm earns too much to be your 4C, and isn't quite good enough to center a playoff 3rd line. Has 4 points this season and is currently injured.
4.
SJS
  1. Niemelä, Topi
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
TOR
  1. Ferraro, Mario
Additional Details:
Ferraro is known for his effort and leadership. Blocks a lot of shots. Has finally developed some offensive instinct, but doesn't know what to do close to net. Is frequently hemmed into his own end and gives up too many shots against. As the team leader in ice time, the Sharks defense is the worst in the league. Probably works as a 4/5D but gets paid too much for that.
5.
SJS
  1. 2025 3rd round pick (EDM)
EDM
  1. Blackwood, Mackenzie
Additional Details:
Had a strong start to the season, but has tapered off significantly. Is currently at a -9 Goals Saved above Average and 89% save percentage.
6.
SJS
  1. 2024 5th round pick (NYR)
  2. 2026 3rd round pick (NYR)
NYR
  1. Duclair, Anthony ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Contributed goals during a 20 game stretch for the Sharks, but outside of those games hasn't scored much. Was benched for not giving enough effort.
7.
SJS
VGK
  1. Barabanov, Alexander
  2. Hoffman, Mike
  3. Labanc, Kevin
Additional Details:
Placeholder team.

All 3 of these score first wingers haven't done much scoring at all this season. Frequently pushed down in the lineup or spent time in the press box. Too expensive except for Barabanov who unfortunately hasn't looked the same after a solid campaign last season. Barabanov has also been out injured for a large chunk of games.
8.
SJS
  1. Raanta, Antti
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (CAR)
CAR
  1. Kähkönen, Kaapo
Additional Details:
Kahkonen has been decent, but is coming off the worst season of his career. Has had a save percentage that frequently dips below .900, but has salvaged things with a .909 in his last ten games. Is 10 games of okay play enough to stake your whole playoff run on (after a -25 goals saved above average last season)?
9.
SJS
  1. 2025 4th round pick (NJD)
NJD
  1. Rutta, Jan
Additional Details:
At this stage in his career he's playing like a 6th defenseman, which is not an efficient use of $2.75M of cap in this constrained environment. Has an additional year left on his deal, so retention will be harder to come by.
10.
SJS
BUF
  1. Couture, Logan
Additional Details:
Was worried about having to retire due to most recent injury. Hasn't played all year. Play doesn't justify a 1C spot on a playoff contender. Has 3 years left on a deal with a high cap hit. Retention not likely.

Detroit has too many overpaid centers (1, but still)

If a Hertl to Boston deal happens, my belief is it will be in the offseason based on Boston’s current cap. The Bruins can’t get to the cap position for Hertl this year without Ullmark being traded

I would still take Sturm. His cap hit isn't much of an issue for Detroit. We have been running Fischer as 4C lately.....

I would take Sturm. Fischer at 4C is not ideal.

Rather have a pick than worry about our 4C considering we're unlikely to make the playoffs anyways.

He has another year which is why I have targeted him in the past.

Meh. He's a 4C. Any pick beyond a 4th is too much for a 4C.

I get that. Just not alot in free agency next Offseason so I would try to acquire him. A guy like him or Faksa, as much as people hate on him, if the price was cheap enough. I would be comfortable sending a third but not much more. I just think we need better defensive forwards and more physical forwards in the bottom six. Ideally ones that don't take alot penalties either.

Keep Kostin and Sprong we know they fit in and play well in the system. Then I think Berggren coming up and Veleno and Rasmussen coming back makes more sense than acquiring Faska or Sturm. If you didn't have to give up any assets to get one of them then take a shot but since you'd have to trade to get one of them it's just not worth it.
