Take a 2nd round pick for Schmidt let Winnipeg retain $1.45M then Ottawa can flip him at 50% of $4.5M for a cap hit of $2.25M retained and get an additional pick that would probably end up being maybe a 3rd or a 4th. At $2.25M Schmidt is certainly worth a 3rd a 4th and Ottawa has just received a 2nd and 3/4 for $2.25M in cap space for one year. Ottawa doesn't need a 1st if Winnipeg can eat some money. Weaponize the cap space for draft capital.
