Nope, he's as greedy as Nylander, he will steal every dime he can get. I do think he'll be nice enough to give us a discount worth about 10 cents

If Dubas was not a brain dead GM, he wouldn't have given him a NMC in the last 2 years of his deal. Tre either pays Marner what he asks for or he walks and I'm more interested in the latter

Do you think the Leafs keep him if he wants max value too?

Tre just did the same thing with Nylander fullNMC for 8 years. You see Pastas deal? He becomes more trade able as his deal gets closer to the end of the term. Don’t know what it is with Toronto

Nope, Paul Marner. The fact that I know anyone's dad by first name that hasn't played in the nhl should tell you everything you need to know

What option do they have? Tre is in a bad boat, lose-lose situation. If he lets Marner walk for nothing, he looks even worse (especially after the whole Gudreau/Tkachuk thing). If he pays Marner EXACTLY what he wants, he looks like a GM that can't win negotiations. There is also no chance Marner is waiving his NMC

Do you think it’s worth it to try and see what you can get for him in the offseason with one year left?

Explain why you think he will. He didn't before and the big 3 never have. Keep dreaming.

No. Paul Marner and his acolyte Darren Dreger will ask for more than what the Leafs will want to pay.

It's probably eating Marner alive that Willy will be making more than him next season.

The only reason is because I think he really wants to stay and play with Matthews. If Tre says we can’t afford this, maybe it’s a thought for this with shorter term? You are probably right but what if it’s an ultimatum now?

Little Mitchy has a NMC. Leafs hands are tied.

If they say, we can’t resign you and they make a trade with a contender? You’re probably right but looking for different avenues.

Little Mitchy wants his cake and to eat it too.

He's a Toronto boy who wants to play his entire career for Toronto.

He also wants to be paid amongst the elite players in the game. Make as close to what Matthews makes as possible.

He's not interested in taking a hometown discount. This doesn't exist in Toronto.

If Tree were to tell him he's not paying him what he wants then he'll just hold out until MLSE knuckles under like they always do.

In the core 5 players eyes, the Salary cap is the Leafs problem. Not the players problem.

It’s sad but I think that may be true. Everyone knows this isn’t a recipe for success. If they keep all 3 (and JT around 6/7M) paying them max value. It shows they could care less about a Cup and care more about selling tickets and jerseys.

Winning is secondary in Toronto. MLSE will continue printing money no matter what the results are.

I mean sure. The players will try their best to win.

But it's quite clear the main goal is to make as many millions as they can before they retire.

Tavares will take a vet haircut. He's made his money.

The tone was set early with Matthews, Marner and Nylander.

Give in and pay them what they want before they won anything.

You can argue they have earned their contracts. In the regular season.

Playoffs have been a complete failure.

But I've never had the impression that playoff failure bothers them.

Maybe that's just today's players? Just speculation on my part.

I think you nailed it pretty good. I think they have earned their contracts individually (minus Nylander) but doesn’t mean they all have to be on this team. Lol.

A lot of fans don't agree with it. I don't agree with it.

Because it restricts you from building up quality depth for your team.

Your defense, bottom 6 and goaltending suffer.

Sure you can plug holes and get bargain contracts like Bunting. Or an aging Giordano.

You can have a young kid like Woll be your starting goalie for peanuts.

But you look at your past Cup champions and they all have 1 thing in common.

Quality depth. Good to very good goaltending.

There's no one blueprint to build a Cup winner.

But quality depth throughout your roster will always shine through on any Cup champion.

The Leafs are built for regular season hockey.

Their holes get exposed in the playoffs.

There's plenty of proof over the past 7 years.

What's the definition of insanity?

We all know the answer.

Never thought I’d say this but I couldn’t agree more. Very frustrating to be Leaf fan and watch this go down.

Agree with most of what's been said above.

Mitch gets the wrath from the fanbase because he's a local kid and the last of all the big contracts to sign. But it's gross from our fanbase to simply expect him to take take less. None of us in our workplace would willingly take a salary lower than our colleagues just to help out the company.

Matthews and Nylander set the tone with their extensions out of their ELC's and Marner just sits back and makes his salary demands based on what the other two got and where he slots himself in between those two.

If I'm Brad...I hear him out on what the ask is...but I'm also prioritizing what D are actually making it to UFA and which of those can I get signed. Create a balanced roster while you have the chance (and hopefully he has a chance with some of the names potentially available). If you can't get Mitch signed within the budget AFTER focusing on the blueline...then maybe he just has to walk as a UFA. Some of that is going to have to also depend on how much Tavares' re-signing comes down and how much Knies' contract goes up.

I agree with that. There is still a lot of holes on F to fill next year as well. Just don’t see it being manageable unless we find a bunch of hometown discounts and ELC’s. But I personally don’t see it working out.
