Smith to LTIR

Created by: pens1991
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 12, 2024
Published: Jan. 12, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So it looks like Smith is going to be out "Longer Term" from the Zadorov hit last night.

He hasn't been playing well but the penguins have been and sit 3pts outside 3rd in the Metro. If they're anticipating him being out until the playoffs I think we see Dubas get on a trade here in the next few weeks to get in before deadline madness and values go up.

$5M could net the penguins 2 solid players.

Any thoughts from pens fans on targets?

Would say these are easy sellers at this point in the season:
Ottawa
Minnesota
Anaheim
Columbus (wouldn't probably work with the Pens)
Chicago (not really anything to sell)
San Jose (maybe back to that well given summer EK Deal)
Montreal

Would say Buffalo, Seattle and Calgary are fringe sellers (Seattle has been hot but i think they'd be wise to sell)

Could actually see the Wild being interested in this, but for the life of me I can't figure out why Pittsburgh would be

I like the Merrill idea -- maybe POJ for Merrill and late pick bc the young upside of POJ?

No longer interested, would rather just give you Merrill for future considerations

I truthfully don't know much on Merrill, but the pens need an update in the bottom three of the bottom 6 of their defense. So it's an idea.

Maybe he finds some kind of form elsewhere, but Merrill is currently one of the whipping boys in Minnesota. He has not been good at all. As I said above, I would happily give him for free.

I had a ACGM a bit ago where I looked at pretty much every player that could help us on bad teams with a low cap hit (apologies my phrases are out of order) but I think of someone like Taylor Raddysh from CHI or Pat Maroon from MIN if we want a checking line forward

(((From my old post my complete list:

Centres- Nick Dowd, Oscar Sundqvist, Michael Pezetta, Travis Boyd

Wingers- Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Sammy Blais, Eeli Tolvanen, Brandon Duhaime, Ryan Hartman, Pat Maroon, Emil Bemstrom, Alexandre Texier, Boris Katchouk, Taylor Raddysh, Adam Ruzicka, Aj Greer, Dillon Dube (only with over 50% retention), Michael Carcone, Liam O'Brien

Defensemen- Dakota Mermis, Zach Bogosian, Adam Boqvist, Nick Seeler, Travis Dermott, Sean Durzi, Troy Stetcher

)))

Obviously some of those teams may not sell… the pens have been linked to Michael Bunting of CAR who Dubas had in TOR but to fit his cap we’d have to move smith either LTIR him until the playoffs or trade him…
Also I saw a rumour regarding Ilya Lybushkin from ANA who dubas also had for a short time…

Want to help me with getting Merrill's things packed up for his move to Pittsburgh?

No take-backsies, Pittsburgh.

LMAO if he's been that bad then i will adjust accordingly.

I thought at one point in time he was a serviceable 3rd pairing

Hard hard pass on Lybushkin

I'm not sure STL moves Sundqvist and if they do they may want a bit.

Dube and Tolvanen would be a dream, but i don't think Seattle is moving Eeli and if they do they'll want a nice return.

I'm going to guess Smith is out until playoffs.

He was alright, just seems to be struggling. He'd probably be ok if you limited his minutes, but he's playing a bit more than he should because Brodin and Spurgeon have been out so everyone else has had to step up to varying results.
