If the Flames wish to re-tool with younger players, and especially if they end up trading Hanifin, then the left shot Chychrun would be a perfect add at 25 years old, if he agrees to Calgary. Joseph was typically labelled as a cap dump before the season began and even after his decent start. I'm not sure how the Sens feel about him, but Calgary would add a guy who can play the right side just like Dube can. If he keeps putting up decent numbers, he would be a good trade candidate in a year or two when the cap is even higher.

Hanifin - Andersson
Chychrun - Tanev
Solovyov/Gilbert/Oesterle/DeSimone

The Senators fill a need for a competent, top right shooting D. If Weegar accepts the move, the Senators have him under contract for a while, and he, Chabot and Sanderson would comprise the core of their D. Kleven is there too. Dube is an RFA after this season, and with his numbers, is a total reclamation. Maybe he can resurrect a career in Ottawa, for sure I wouldn't pay him $2.3m again, so he'd be cheaper, or can be let go if they simply don't want to qualify him. Either way, they get their right D.

Sanderson - Weegar
Chabot - Zub
Brannstrom/Kleven - Hamonic/Bernard-Docker

I think it was Elliot Friedman? who interviewed several NHL scouts (anonymously) to get their opinion on the Senators. One response on Chabot was that he "doesn't play defence, and needs a solid defensive partner to play with", and about Brannstrom, one said, "he's afraid" (or looks afraid, something like that) ... they were interesting responses, but about Chabot, I'd rather the Flames get a guy that can play SOME defence, personally.

chabot is a horse, and plays both ends, hes way better than chychrun, just look at minutes played.

I'm always willing to be wrong about a guy, but I'd have to watch some games first to actually make a true personal belief call. However, minutes played alone isn't the measure I'd use to gauge the value of a particular player to Calgary. Chabot has an $8m price tag for four more seasons after this.. I think Chychrun could be re-signed for less, wherever he wants to play anyway.

Not a fan. Dube is a straight downgrade from Joseph (who's really broken out this season) and Weegar doesn't do anything to help the Sens' consistently horrendous defense. What Ottawa really needs is a physical shutdown D man.
