Plan for Deadline and Future

Created by: JimBenning
Team: 2023-24 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 21, 2024
Published: Jan. 21, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Joshua, Blueger, Cole, DeSmith walk in Free Agency. However, the cap works out to fit them in + the additions of Tanev, Lindhom for the playoffs and rest of the regular season. The following players were re-signed:

Elias Pettersson - 11x8
Elias Lindholm - 7.5x8
Chris Tanev - 3.25x3
Filip Hronek - 7x8
Nikita Zadorov - 4x5
Sam Lafferty - 2x4

These are all roughly market value. Chris Tanev is 34 years old, and this is a good retirement contract. He loves Vancouver and should re-sign. Elias Lindholm is Swedish, and will get to spend the next 8 years with Pettersson. It is $1M less he would have got in Calgary, or at least thats what Elliotte Friedman reported. But I think Vancouver is a more attractive destination to stay. Especially with the elite core and how bright the future is. If push comes to shove, they can give him 8.5. They are also the only team that can give him 8 years. Canucks run a 22 man roster, at least until injuries hit and LTIR.

Also we have to remember OEL’s buyout takes up another $2M in cap space. I have also left another million on the books, in case Lindholm wants more to stay.

      Additional Details:
2nd or 3rd round pick, depending on the trade market. Ottawa will need to replace Tarasenko in the summer. And they have a young enough team, that they don’t care about defensive play as much as real contenders. He is a former 39 goal player, just a season removed. And should be in high demand. He also only has 1 year left on his deal, so his low risk, high reward.

Ottawa doesn't care about defensive play?

They fired the last coach because of the teams poor defensive play and brought in Jacques Martin to get them to play more consistent defensive hockey. The GM talks about bringing in veterans that can play responsible hockey.

I'd argue Ottawa cares very much about playing defensive hockey and about additions that can enforce that mindset.

      Ottawa decline.
Ottawa will be an improved team in the upcoming years without Kuzmenko.
Kuzmenko won't be a good fit for the Sens.
