Description
The thing that nobody knows- that nobody could know- is that Ottawa has coveted Liljegren for years. The Senators know that Brannstrom and Liljegren have the same sort of mind-handshake-symbiotic relationship that the pilots of the giant robots in Pacific Rim had and, as such, are willing to sacrifice the NHL's most overrated/underrated Dman in Chychrun for the sake of wins in the late 2020s. Tanev's cap hit is reduced by 50% from Calgary, and another 50% by, in this case, Chicago, because they are comfortable with money-laundering, but not C. Perry. Toronto wins the Stanley Cup 84% of the time in my NHL Model. I have made lots and lots of money using this model, so I'm a big believer in how accurage it is. Enjoy, losers.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Tanev, Christopher
Additional Details:
Calgary retains $2,250,000 of Tanev's contract
2.
3.
TOR
Chicago retains 50% of Tanev's contract ($1,250,000), but don't let a lack of imagination limit you to Chicago; this is a great offer for the money involved. There is no chance any half-witted GM would accept this generous offer.

Leafs pass on flames and Ottawa typical tanev overpay, and I wouldn’t trade lily for chychrun 1-1 just cause we need RHD far more then LHD and zero chance the leafs even spend 1 first lmao this team isn’t getting rewarded for how they’re playing brad literally came out and said minimal buying if any he’s watching the team and seeing how he can upgrade in the offseason

According to this study done on the cost of retention: https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/2023-trade-deadline-countdown-which-teams-will-be-third-party-money-brokers
This is the cost of 3rd party retention:
    1st Round Pick: $800,000+
    2nd Round Pick: $650,000
    3rd Round Pick: $500,000
    4th Round Pick: $350,000
    5th Round Pick: $185,000
    6th Round Pick $125,000
    7th Round Pick: $100,000<

The trade deadline leaves roughly 1/3rd of the season to be played. Half of one third of Tanev's salary is roughtly $742K in actual cash salary. Putting the cost of retention for him in the area of a 2nd round pick.

Thanks for the generous offer, though. Good talk!

Plus, the number of teams up against the cap because of years of a flat cap also make the retention worth more, or certainly nobody is taking it for a discount. Pretty sure the Athletic did a similar look at cost of retention and got similar results.

Yeah. I remember seeing that too, but I must not have bookmarked it or I accidentally deleted the bookmark.

Though, that might drop off a bit in the summer with the cap raise and the planned cap raises the following years. But, as it goes up, so will players demands. So i'm sure it will go back to cap struggles quickly. A lot of teams up against it right now have already spent most of the cap space they were about to gain with their extensions.
