It's more that we wouldn't let him in the city. He's still public enemy #1, even if he decided he really wants to retire in Columbus there's no way the organization or city welcome him back.

Neither deal is close. The Laine deal is particularly bad, Rakell and Laine are both on .5 ppg paces, but one is 25 having a down year and the other is 30 on a pretty career-average pace and signed a full 2 years longer. Carter aside (I'm just going to pretend he's not there), the difference between the two isn't an AHL D-man, a couple of mid-round picks, and a 2nd-rounder that likely doesn't tangibly help the team until 2030 or later.

He’d still have to waive his NMC and he simply wouldn’t do that

Laine is always hurt (hasn't played more than 56 games in a season since 2019) and I'd prefer it if our next draft picks weren't reduced to a 2024 6th and 7th and a 2025 4th rounder. Is this team a Stanley Cup contender? I'm not in the camp of going all out and mortgaging the future any further so there's that caveat also but I don't think this team gets us close to a cup either.

Any team is also probably only getting Laine for 50 games since he's always hurt and he's also been trending down in terms of his play and his usefulness to playing winning hockey. He's basically just a sniper (a very good one though at that) if you ask me....

With the exception of this season and his first half-season in Columbus (which have both been major adjustments), he's been at or near the top of the team in xGF%, near-ppg, and top-3 in points despite playing only 55 and 56 games each season. Yes, he's hurt a lot and overpaid a little, but he's still a bona-fide top-line winger and scoring threat when he's on the ice. This season is a gross anomaly.

It's not a matter of "best offer gets him", he's young and internally valuable and we have zero reason to sell low on him because he's been hurt and playing on a team in turmoil.
