What’s the big picture here? Accepting that the leafs have pooched it and committed way too much to some regular season mediocrity and playoff failure?

Big picture is this team isn't winning anything in these next two years. The smart move would be to trade guys like Bertuzzi and Domi for picks, and approach JT to see if he'll waive to a contender this year. Leafs can retain half for a 1st and prospect.

Then in the 2025-26 season they will have plenty of prospects and cap space to build a true contender around Matthews, Nylander, and maybe Marner.

he had 36 goals and 80 points last yr. The opportunity would be way too big to pass up.

Tavares is not clutch and sucks at 5v5 in the playoffs. See, the problem with Tavares is he is awful in the playoffs, his corsi is dreadul with a majority o-zone starts (60% zone starts in o-zone). He has only 24 5v5 points in 55 playoff games (only 11 5v5 points in 31 GP with TOR).

lol dudes decline is like an anvil thrown into the Mariana Trench. I’ve never seen a decline so drastic. There’s a reason Toronto wants to part ways, he’s done. No foot speed, and the hand speed is quickly following.

Oilers say no. Janmarks a defensive wizard. Bert is underwhelming. We’ll keep Janmark and get a better Winger with the 1st for the Cup Run.

That would be perfect for a 2nd line center. Is Lindholm better? don't think so. And hes gonna want 8 net yr for long term.

This convo is about a hypothetical that would never happen but just for fun who would you rather have? Lindholm for the rest of the yr? then either let him walk or commit 8+ to him long term? hes in decline too.

You're joking, right?

Over the past three seasons, Lindholm has just 3 fewer goals and 13 fewer points than Tavares. (EL 209 GP, JT 204 GP)

Lindholm has been Top-10 in Selke voting two seasons in a row and had Byng votes in 2022, Tavares has no nominations for any awards since coming to Toronto.

Lindholm plays a key penalty-killing role on CGY and is a special teams beast. Tavares has less than 1 minute of PK TOI over the last 3 seasons.

Finally, Lindholm's cap hit is 4.85M vs. Tavares' 11M.

The Canucks aren't going to re-sign Lindholm for the same reason they wouldn't want Tavares, they can't afford to re-sign Pettersson and Hronek if they did. Lindholm would be purely a rental.

The difference of course is that Lindholm is having a worse season offensively than the guy whos declining into oblivion (supposedly).

Lindholm is completely overrated as a defensive fwd. He's below average by many models accounts. He was rewarded as. Selke finalist because he played on a historic line. When his linemates left he has declined. Calling him a beast is actually kinda funny. He's a very passive player. The antithesis of a beast almost. Not saying he's terrible by any means but he is not what you think he is. And the counting stats and advanced data show that. He does kill penalties and win faceoffs though.

Tavares is being retained at 50% here to he'd be cheaper over the two yrs (if you even got a 2nd yr out of Lindholm as doing so would involve a long term commitment to a guy you probably don't wanna commit to long term.

You only make yourself look foolish when you talk about a player that you don't watch outside of CGY-TOR games.

Gaudreau and Tkachuk left in the 2022 offseason. Lindholm still finished Top-10 in Selke voting in 2022-23, when Gaudreau was in Columbus and Tkachuk in Florida. He has a CF% of 53.7 at 5v5 with Calgary across five and a half seasons. Yes, this year his CF% is down along with the rest of CGY, which makes him a cheaper target. He's one of the more dynamic players in Calgary.

Tavares at 50% is still 5.5M. Again, Lindholm unretained is 4.85M. Retain 50% on him and he's 2.425M, an extremely reasonable cap hit.

Lindholm is the better trade target, whether Tavares is available or not.

That should tell you all you need to know about Selke votes. They're voted on by beat writers who are in bed before the Flames even play. The fact he was top 10 last season shows that the voting is very much based on reputation. Which of course Lindholm garnered while on that big line.

Not sure I'd have much interest in a Calgary v Toronto game.

The difference is you'd get another yr of Tavares after this at 5.5. Lindholm you'd have to commit to long term if you wanted another yr at prob 8 or so and that is a total bogey contract. Anyone can see that.

No, the Canucks absolutely would not at 5.5M. They do not have the cap space to take him. If you wanted to trade Kuzmenko 1 for 1 for Tavares 50% retained, sure, but we both know that's never going to happen. There are a half dozen lower cap hit centres out there that fit the Canucks' need better than Tavares does, centres the Canucks don't have to give three key futures for; Lindholm, Henrique, Monahan, Vatrano, hell even JEE has a better chance of coming to VAN that Tavares does. Tavares is a good player, but he doesn't fit the Canucks.
