They have no leverage in FA and with the cap going up the cost for a guy who plays like rust is going to be a couple mill more than his current AAV.

You do realize the cap is projected to go up 4 million this offseason right? Also so you trade away a player who is working, for a potential overpaid top 6 player this offseason? If you are looking at a legit top 6 talent they probably will cost you more than what Rust is making this offseason. Especially with the cap going up.

Two 4th's for Rust w/ some retention is a bargain, but the Hawks won't be interested in Rust w/ 4 years left on his deal. Hawks want to have maximum cap flexibility in the summer of '26 when Bedard and Korchinski need new deals.

Rust isn’t going anywhere, nor should he. He is well worth his contract. If the Pens were to move someone in the off-season to clear some cap it’ll be Smith.
