Does This Make Sense

Created by: Mr_Gardoki
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 1, 2024
Published: Feb. 1, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The proposed deal below is not a finished deal. These are just the key players in the deal, so first:

1) Does this even make sense for the Senators to begin with? Graves has just been a poor fit with this team, but has a proven track record otherwise, so I get there's probably hesitancy for Sens fans.

2) If this makes sense for the Sens, without doing the Capfriendly-Overvalue-Shuffle, is 1-for-1 enough?

3) If not 1-for-1, what would need to be added? Off limits futures from the Pens: 1st, Pickering and Yager.

Ottawa would want RHD. They have Chabot and Sanderson signed long term in the top 4 on the left hand side.

Pittsburgh would have to add significantly.

There's no amount of tweaking that would make a deal around these two work at all for Ottawa. Graves is a massive downgrade, on a straight up bad contract. It doesn't make Ottawa better, it doesn't address the imbalance of LD/RD on the blueline (the only reason you even consider moving Chychrun), they get older and they lose so much cap value. Complete nonstarter for Ottawa on a fundamental level.

I don't think Pittsburgh could add enough to make it make sense

My line of thought is that Graves is the style of dman they're missing and with the reports that OTT may be moving Chychrun, it might be a match, but I can understand why it may not make sense.

Yeah I agree. Graves contract is not going to age well.

If the deal is involving Graves it’s going to also involve TWO of the untouchables you listed…

I mean yeah its been said already but its not even close as a 1 for 1, and to offset one of the untouchables would probably need to be touched

I dont see what's in it for Ottawa. EK65 might make more sense but even then I'm not sure they'd do it

Sure he's the style of dman they need, but his defensive results aren't actually all that hot, and he shoots left anyway, which doesn't address the other concern on the blueline. Age, cap hit, term, play, none of it adds up for Ottawa, and you're not even willing to move any of the futures Ottawa would obviously need to make this remotely worth it. You don't get a 25 year old top pair Dman on a cheap deal if you're only willing to move pieces you aren't worried about losing/ actively want to be rid of.

It's not a fit. I get that. Just seemed like there could be mutual benefits to this trade.

I literally agreed I can see it's not a fit. I was explaining my original thought process. Do you just like arguing for the sake of arguing?

I wasn't arguing, just stating we see things differently.
