Forwards are different. They play all 82 games. They deserve that kind of money. Even an elite goalie in today's NHL plays only 50-60 games. So paying them anything over 5 million is a big mistake.

Would it be a more effective point if Matthews had played all 82 games in any season, other than his rookie one? Probably not, because it ignores how important goaltending is in the playoffs, where a starter is expected to play in every game too.

It ignores how certain positions are in sports can be different but no less important (do star baseball pitchers make significantly less, because they play such a small % of their teams games?).

It also ignores the fact that Saros does not make over $5M a year.
