Trading Futures for Term

Created by: maccer25
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 6, 2024
Published: Feb. 6, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Seems to be nothing of major value for rentals on the market this year - wonder if the leafs could make some deals with teams that want to restructure / rebuild I wouldn't be afraid to spend a first if you're getting players with some term that will be around for a couple of runs.

Unsure on returns as long term deals dont get traded all that frequently

Both trades are just a start obviously - players dont even necessarily have to be weegar or Ek just want to see what it would look like adding a couple players with term.

That might get you Tanev 50-75% retained with perhaps a Team Friendly extension in place (assuming he’s willing), but that’s definitely not anywhere close to Weeger

I'm glad you wouldn't be afraid to spend a lone 2026 1st on Ek. That's very brave of you.

Erikson Ek will demand a ton if he were to be traded but I doubt Minnesota even considers offers. 5 years at under 5.5 is insane value for what he brings to a team. Minnesota would need to decide on full rebuild and even then he would demand multiple first round picks and solid prospects

You guys read the comments first? Or just jump on to blab. Like I said - It doesnt necessarily have to be those two players and if it is - obviously just a start.

The leaf's need to sit back this year and not move anything with a 1st or few quality prospects we have this team is not a contender anymore They need to tweak and look towards the 2025 season

Step 1 avoid the urge to spend at the deadline
Step 2 Fix the D and goaltending and look for quality bottom 6 this summer as they will be tight against the cap Let the kids play in 2024
Step 3 No longer cap strap can add the needed pieces to the forward group and a real contending window opens

Lol yeah I was just giving you what it would cost to acquire a guy like EK with term. Check out the return from the Canes trades for Trocheck and Skjei near the deadline in 2020. At the time of those trades however, their contracts weren't considered a steal like EK and Weegar's currently are. Contract value is everything these days so you're not just paying for the player but for the quality of their contract.

No way do the sharks trade a pick for Kampf. He is 100% a bad contract and would require incentive to take on that deal, even then I would bet we’re on his NTL

I'd argue that a (most likely late) 1st round pick 3 drafts from now isn't even a start for an Eriksson Ek trade.

The core is just hitting their prime They have another 5-6 years and with the cap going to be rising every year going forward they are in good shape.
