I like the trade idea for CGY but odds are that won't cut it. Likely need 1st+Prospect+Bahl for Hanafin and 1st and TOP prospect (Holtz, Nemec, Mercer) for Markstrom.

We’re not retaining on Markstrom AND taking Vanecek back

I can’t see CGY retaining on Markstrom at all tbh

Including a need or two, like a Centre and/or RD would be nice as well. Bahl has good size, but isn’t anything particularly attractive or of much need

I'd go as high as 1st+Graeme Clarke+Bahl for Hanifin retained.

Holtz, Nemec, Mercer are off the table.

I'd go as high as 1st+2nd+2nd+Vitek for Markstrom at 50%

replaced 2nd+2nd+Clarke with just another 1st in this case, though would be potentially willing to throw clarke back in if Calgary pays for the 3rd party retention on Hanifin

I don’t think we push “all in” on this season. We are closer to the lottery than the playoffs.

Add guys who can help us in 2024-25 and beyond.

I agree but this would be my offer.

Every other team that could potentially be interested is going to be looking for retention.

With no retention my offer would be 2nd+Vitek tbh.

-I don't see any other bidders who can afford Markstrom unretained (NJD barely can, and can't take hanifin as well without retention on Markstrom)
-Some bidders will be eliminated by the NMC
-As good as he's been this year he's still 34 years old and the history on aging goalies is ugly.

C is a need for everyone, it's the most expensive position to get. Same with RD. Everyone says they want those positions, very rarely do the quality prospects there get moved.

Is NHL ready LD not a need for Calgary? I don't see a single NHL ready LD on your roster for next year?

At LHD next year you have?? I can't imagine LD lining up to sign in calgary next year unless you overpay them.

I think we’re good at LD Depth with Weegar, Kylington, Poirier, Gilbert, Solovyov, Kuznetsov all of the latter are essentially NHL Ready. Alternatively, finding LD’s isn’t very difficult

We acquired another LD Prospect from VAN and a Top RD Prospect in Brzustewicz. Just gotta see is the Finn will sign an NHL Contract with the Flames and whether Brzustewicz can play Defence and become a complete Player as well

We would want to discuss Mercer and Nemec given NJD has Jack Hughes and Hirschier at C and Hamilton and Marino at RD already

Flames would need an offer that apparently blows them away to even consider approaching or moving Markstrom.

I can’t see CGY retaining anything on him unless we could move Vladar or Vanecek prior to next season and we had super cheap prospects coming back to offset the cost we would have paid to bring somebody else in.

We could do it because Wolf will be good and cheap for a few years yet, but I just doubt ownership agrees to it

Nemec not on the table under any circumstances.

I'd be willing to offer Mercer, but you won't like the price of Hanifin 50% retained+Markstrom 50% retained for Mercer+Vitek+3rd

Weegar is a RHD is he not?

Kylington a UFA, and I don't know about any of the others but none of them seem like anything more than AHLers.
Jurmo has been very underwhelming overseas.

I simply can't get behind the logic of "this guy has a full NMC that restricts his movement"=price goes up.

The NMC brings his value down, not up.

tbh as NJD I wouldn't bother wasting my time with negotiations unless I knew Markstrom would waive beforehand.

It's an interesting strategy from Calgary to try and turn the NMC into a + somehow, but I doubt fitzy gets tricked

Weegar plays LD

Kylington is a ??? But I don’t see many other teams stepping up to sign him given his recent mental health issues and questionable availability & reliability. His best opportunity is likely still in Calgary, but I could be wrong. If he leaves, we have Poirier to replace him

Maybe Gilbert leaves too, but I highly doubt it.

Bahl isn’t doing anything more than Gilbert, Solovyov or Kuznetsov would be able to do as well. If we really wanted a Bigger 3LD/7th D-Man we could probably ship a late pick to WPG for Logan Stanley…

I don’t disagree, I’m just saying that’s what they’ve said. I think it’s more about respecting his NMC and not bothering him or considering moving him unless it’s an offer they can’t refuse essentially forcing them to approach Markstrom to consider waiving. He has a Young Family with his 1st child just anrriving about this time last season, so it’s more about that then trying to draw more value in a return for him

That said, Markstrom has recently said he’s open to whatever makes sense, so moving him is definitely a possibility and again, I’m not suggesting it would cost more. The benefit for the Flames is to open up a spot for Dustin Wolf. We haven’t been able to move or find any interest for Vladar and freeing up cap space is appealing in moving Markstrom as well

We wouldn’t actually want Vanecek, but if we could have Vladar & Vanecek compete and hopefully improve their values in the process, we could move one of them in the off-season or by the deadline next year. Vanecek + Vladar + Wolf is close to what Markstrom Cap Hit is anyways

Finally I get the Age debate, but many Defensemen and Goalies play great till 40. I’m more against having older Forwards and their games falling off after 32.

I vehemently disagree about Goalies aging curves. Goalies sporadically can have good seasons randomly when old, but VERY rarely do they stay consistently great for multi year stretches past 33.

No goalie in the past decade has been a top 10 goalie over the stretch from age 34-36 (what we'd be acquiring Markstrom for). Closest was probably Fleury but I'd argue he was a product of Vegas and he was really only elite for the 1 year

Meh, there’s been plenty of quality goalies playing good hockey in to their late 30’s, so whatevs. You could get a Younger one who has a career ending injury. Everything’s a gamble in sports but yes, we must still take generalities & commonalities in to consideration.

Markstrom Likely Willing to Waive NMC for Move to Devils

I just don’t see the need for Holtz in CGY given we have Coronato, but maybe we move Coronato to ANA or NYR or some other Team in a package for a C or RD

I'd much rather keep Holtz in NJD.

In a trade like this you're welcome to make any swaps you like based on these valuations.

Mercer: 3 1sts
Holtz: 2 1sts
Casey: 1st+3rd
Arseni: 1st
Toffoli: 1st
Bahl: 2nd
Vitek: negative 3rd
Siegs: 2 1sts
Marino: 2 1sts
Clarke, Foote, Stillman, Vilen, Daws, Schmid, Hattaka, etc: 3rd
Bahl: 2nd
Lenni: 2nd+3rd
2 mill AAV in retention on markstrom=1st
1 mill AAV in retention on markstrom=2nd

I vehemently disagree with your player valuations

We’re all biased and typically over value our own players and prospects though I guess

I can’t deny that I may have bias. That’s why I usually prefer to offer picks as an estimate of value and say “or whatever assets that NJD views as = or less to these picks and that *insert team* views as = or more than these picks”

Toffoli likely is worth a 1st, but 50% retained

He does have 21 Goals on the season. already and plays all 3 Forward positions

I’d be willing to pay a 3rd team for the retention if that’s what it takes (would like to avoid overages).

I’d be shocked if a 1st or assets equivalent weren’t included.

Might be Toffoli+ for a 1st, might be 1st+ for toffoli.

Depends on the market.
