Next Season

Initial Creation Date: Feb. 15, 2024

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
24' Deadline:
- This is the only way I can see Jake Allen moving. A similar contract needs to come back. A need for a need.

- Using the Jake McCabe trade as a comp for David Savard. Conditional 1st or early 2nd (makes more sense that it is ours, will probably end up being 38-40)

Off-Season:
Listen, I think Kent Hughes will target a Top 6F in the age range that matches our core. Most likely a player that needs/wants a change of scenery (Zegras/Kakko/Lundell, etc.) However, I do not think we are good trade partners with ANA or NYR. Anaheim fans think he's worth Reinbacher, Slafkovsky, 2024 1st if it lands in the top eight. I just do not see us doing that and our surplus is their surplus. The most I can gather would be that Hughes attempts to recreate the Dubois trade but quantity over quality just isn't want ANA seems to want to do. Would love to know peoples' thoughts on values for these players. CBJ new management will probably want a longer look at Kent Johnson so I do not see him as a trade fit either.

Ideally I would love to see a new home for Dvorak and Armia but I think letting those contracts run out and have some internal competition next pre-season isn't the worst thing.

Hopefully Chevy is done with his charitable contributions to Montreal. The Jets don't really have the cap room to get stuck with Savard's contract next season.

Upgrade the pick coming from COL and add 50% retention on Allen and then it could make sense

Very fair thought. I think now more than ever, GM's see that parity in the league and when you're having a strong season, you try and go for it. I think the Jets can take a good run at DAL & COL. Getting some of the Jets players back with $10 million in space is doable if Chevy parts with a player like Schmidt in the off-season. This idea could have gone towards Dallas because I think they're thinking RD as well but WPG has our 2nd so just made more sense.

Is this coming from a more COL perspective? The value for Kent in keeping another retention spot with Petry already there is worth withholding a higher pick. I do think you have a point from a COL thought though if they need the extra $1.85M space but if we can match those contracts then I wonder if the retention is needed.

If the Jets add a defenseman that isn't a top 4 RHD, they just need a rental depth guy in case of injuries this year and a depth guy like that shouldn't cost a high 2nd.

That is sort of what I mean though. We can both agree David Savard is a 18 minute defenseman and plays the style playoff teams want. Wouldn't you want to take a bigger shot while your division is wide open? Being able to slot Demelo at 6D would be amazing for their depth. Especially if DAL targets a Chris Tanev type, WPG may want to react similar to Lindholm effect.

Yeah from COL's perspective it doesnt make sense for the cap. If MTL wants to keep a retention slot then it could go through a 3rd party team

God bless Chevy! Let's hope he still has one more good deed in him with MTL and changes those picks for WINs 2025 1st wink Habs can retain 50% on Savard to keep the good vibes going.

Nah. Winnipeg currently had one of the best defenses in the NHL and Savard isn't an upgrade on anyone in top 6. So, just a cheaper depth guy makes more sense.

Plus, as I said the Jets don't have the cap space to carry both Schmidt and Savard next year. $9.5 mil is way too much to spend on the bottom pair.

Hopefully he's learned his lesson from the last Montreal all-star he traded for.

Colorado can't afford a guy paid more than the starter as a back up next year. Bearing in mind they need to replace RyJo as well. Without 50% retained it's a non-starter for the Avs. Even with it the cap would be tight. The Avs probably only have 1-1.5 mil to commit to a back up next season.
