Realistic Deadline moves - minor ones

Created by: Nightowl26
Team: 2023-24 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 2, 2024
Published: Feb. 19, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just some minor moves at the deadline. Big moves to come in the off-season when Roy replaces Lou at GM.

Would move Martin and Clutterbuck but I think they will let both finish the year and career with the Isles. They are good solid warriors for us. Lou is loyal to a fault.

These all seem fine. In all honesty, Reilly has been phenomenal and I would rather hold onto him, move Bolduc then bring him back next season as a 6/7D pair with Odelius.

Bolduc is a big body (6'4) with a hard shot. Guys like this on defense take a little longer to develop. You don't trade guys like this. You hold on to him. He's not been given a true shot. He reminds me of Pelech the first time he came up to the big club. Trade Reilly now, we aren't making the playoffs. Play Bolduc and Salo (call him up) and see what you have if you give them regular minutes.

Odelius, and guys like George are at least 2-3 years away making the jump to the NHL.

I think your approach of minor moves at the deadline is logical. I personally would keep Reily for another season. He has been really good on the 3rd pair and would give bolduc time to develop, as I think he will be good. Only thing I would do as well is trade either Martin or Clutterbuck as they could fetch a late pick. Additionally Maclean was a solid option when in nhl and I want to see him get a longer audition.

I would be more than happy moving both Clutter and Martin for any type of picks. But we all know how stubborn and loyal Lou is. He knows these 2 are gone at the end of the year and most likely going to retire. So he's going to let them do it on the Island.

Has good and solid as he has played on the 3rd pairing, I don't see why we can't get a 4th at least for him. I stated a 3rd because I was also giving along with Reilly a 5th too.

He's waiver fodder. He's been on waivers twice in the last calendar year. You guys literally acquired him off waivers. He's a 7D at best on a good team because he's a one dimensional D and that dimension is not defense. He's not worth anything. Especially not to a playoff team.

ok, that's your opinion....Understood. The only thing I will say in defense of him getting a little more than a 7th. Teams this year, especially playoff teams have no cap space. To be honest in general I don't see any big deals going down this deadline because of that. Reilly at 1M is worth the risk for a low pick which rarely, rarely hit any way.

At 1M or less there will be far better options for playoff teams, who usually go after size, grit and defense for the playoffs, none of which Reilly possesses.

Yeah that’s a good point. I think Lou probably asks them in the next week or so if they want to chase a cup. If they want to he will accommodate it otherwise they stay. I actually think Clutter has another year with another team. I do agree Martin probably retires and joins the organization like Boychuck.

I am not sure if he is worth a 3rd rounder but he had been a good 3rd paring guy especially under Roy. Roy was originally going to alternate him and Bolduc but he won the spot outright which proves he is a solid defender. I think he has among the most shots as a defender per game when he plays so he at least provides some offense.

Yeah you’re not getting Kayliyev for Wahlstrom. Keep dreaming on that one. Kayliyev has had a rough 40 game stretch, but his 2 previous seasons were good. Wahlstrom is a bust and has never really had success. You’d be lucky to get a 4th round pick for him, not a young roster player.

Kaliyev career-to-date: 176 GP, 34 G, 36 A, 70 PTS, 12:27 TOI (17-28-45 at 5v5 and 17-8-25 on PP)

Wahlstrom career-to-date: 189 GP, 34 G, 33 A, 67 PTS, 11:55 TOI (23-23-46 at 5v5 and 11-10-21 on PP)

And to expound on your "[Kaliyev's] 2 previous seasons were good:
AK 2021-22: 80 GP, 14-13-27, 12:39 TOI
AK 2022-23: 56 GP, 13-15-28, 11:41 TOI

Wahlstrom's same two seasons:
OW 2021-22: 73 GP, 13-11-24, 12:04 TOI
OW 2022-23: 35 GP, 7-9-16, 11:41 TOI

If Wahlstrom's only worth a 4th rounder, I don't know how you could say Kaliyev is worth much more, when they've basically produced at the same rate in their careers to date.

Islanders should have rebuild when they had the chance. The top of the metro will be Canes, Devils and Rangers for the next couple years until CBJ or Philly or whoever replaces the rangers

We gave it a shot, 2 back to back conference finals. But Lou should have started the rebuild last year. It is what it is. Hopefully Lou is gone next year and we re-tool then

I mean yea 1 win away and probably smoke the Habs in the SCF, but they definitely should of rebuild

Hard to retool when you have Lee, JGP, mayfield and other bad contracts that don’t help

Most definitely....Lou screwed us with these horrible contracts. Definitely an up hill battle.

the most annoying thing is, I can squint and see the 4-D chess with those contracts - stretch the cap out enough that worst case, you're buying a guy out and paying a small penalty for a few years when the cap is presumably higher. the problem is using that gambit on a guy like Scott Mayfield, who was turning 31 the night the puck dropped on that contract. I can see the sense in giving that term to 27-year-old Engvall, or even giving Cizikas a year less term when he was a year younger. But that Mayfield deal was poison before the ink was dry.
