Habs should consider but they wont

Created by: jonh514
Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 20, 2024
Published: Feb. 20, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In this scenario, the Habs have pick #6 and there are more good defensemen available than forwards. If the Habs can find a trade for a premium forward like Necas, they should consider trading Reinbacher and drafting one of the excellent defenders in this draft.

probably the biggest need on mtl right now is a top pairing RD....so how is this something they should do? trying to land a RD in the draft pushing the time line for the position to be filled back another year. use the 1st to trade for a forward instead if thats the logic.

Habs shouldn't consider at all, nor give Necas that contract.

But Levshunov could be a better player than Reinbacher... It's touchy because Kloten is such a tire fire, but if you feel Reinbacher is better than Levshunov, then fine.

How many defenders do you want to stack up. What forward in this draft beyond Celebrini is gonna be a 70+ point player?

I think Reinbacher has the making of a top line dman, its always hard to say this early however hes expected to be in laval in april so if all go well he could be making his nhl debut in the fall 2025, would rather stick with that path then hope the draft shakes up in a way that go MTL way, knowing that a lot of teams are going to be looking for dman also.

I do agree they need to add another legit top 6 forward, but with all the additional picks they have in the next two years theres options out that for sure.

On the flip side if i was carolina i'm not making that trade straight up unless i have no interest in giving Necas the raise he is due.

Canes pass. I understand the logic for Montreal, but Carolina's defensive pipeline is loaded. With Morrow on the cusp, there's not much need for a Reinbacher. Plus, Nikishin's not far now (I know he's a LD, but defensive prospects and we don't get to talk about Niki nearly enough, he's so good). And, Carolina's biggest issue is still scoring. Moving a 65-70 point winger for a defenseman doesn't make much sense. Just no interest in this

Reinbacher will be great, but Habs will have to add if they want Necas. Canes don’t have any reason to sell Necas if they aren’t upgrading their roster now.

They drafted Reinbacher over a couple of stud forwards. That's a huge vote of confidence in him.

MTL may have a lot of defense prospects, but realistically they do not all hit their projected ceiling. For that reason, teams with many prospects generally don't trade their prospects because they have too many. They do when they’re forced to whether it's because of the salary cap or risk of waivers. Ride Reinbacher and if he develops properly, a young mobile 2-way RD will have more trade value than he has now.

Fair enough. Habs fans putting Necas down as easily replaceable are fools.

Based on the fact they are thin on the right side (D) and DR is projected to be a top pairing guy. They habs traded two top young D in Sergachev and McDonagh, why make the same mistake for a third time.

It's a brutal offer for the Habs.

There are other ways to acquire a 60 point winger.

71 point winger if you look at last season, and don't discount that the Canes are having a rough go of it this year.

But I drafted Levshunov to fill that gap. Reinbacher is by no means a lock to be a top pair defender. He might be, maybe, one day. It has not gone well in Kloten this year. Do you have any concerns whatsoever?

No concerns at all.

Hughes should be canned if he makes that move.

No concerns at all about DR? You are an optimist sir. Good for you.
